Friday October 20
San Gabriel (4-4) at Bell Gardens (4-4)
This could be for second place in the Almont League. Both teams are looking up at Schurr but a win here will put either one in prime position for a second-place finish. Both teams have been up and down but San Gabriel has shown some signs of an explosive offense. The Matadors get the victory.
San Gabriel 24 Bell Gardens 17
Rancho Cucamonga (8-0) at Damien (8-0)
This is the game of the weekend. Two undefeated heavyweights going at it and will try to match each other blow for blow. The only common opponent heading into this one is Chino Hills. Damien beat the Huskies 34-7 while Rancho Cucamonga blitzed them 49-0. It could come down to a fourth quarter turnover. Rancho Cucamonga is battle tested having played a brutal schedule. The Cougars hand Damien its first loss.
Rancho Cucamonga 34 Damien 27
Arroyo (4-4) at South El Monte (8-0)
This is the one everybody has been waiting for in the Mission Valley League. South El Monte is undefeated while Arroyo is right where most people expected them to be after winning three straight. “This is the best South team I’ve seen in a long time. South is good,” said a longtime MVL coach. Everything has come together for the Eagles this year. They have won the close games as well as the routs. Arroyo is…well…Arroyo. The Knights have experience and have been in this situation before. South El Monte gets a big kick in the fourth quarter and escapes with the win.
South El Monte 30 Arroyo 27
Crescenta Valley (6-2) at Burroughs (7-1)
Burroughs is the best team in the Pacific. The Bears have proven that in its last two victories. Crescenta Valley will put up a fight but doesn’t have quite enough to hold off Chris Kulikov and Burroughs. The Bears pull away in the second half and remain unbeaten in league.
Burroughs 35 Crescenta Valley 17
La Canada (3-5) at South Pasadena (7-1)
South Pasadena is still eyeing that Rio Hondo League title. A couple things have to happen but the Tigers could still end up as the champs or in a tie for first place in the wild Rio. La Canada lost a shootout last week to Monrovia while South Pas took care of Temple City. Jason Hong is a hard man to bring down. Tigers win.
South Pasadena 35 La Canada 24
Los Altos (5-3) at Northview (7-1) (Covina District Field)
Great matchup in the Valle Vista. Northview needs the win to keep its eye on the prize – a Valle Vista League title. Los Altos fell last week to Diamond Ranch in overtime and could use a win to avoid being winless in league. The Conquerors may have to wait until next week. The Vikings just have too much. Northview by two scores.
Northview 35 Los Altos 21
San Dimas (4-4) at Diamond Ranch (7-1) (Thursday October 19)
San Dimas got a taste of Northview last week in a 26-12 loss and the Saints get another tough one this week with Diamond Ranch. The Panthers have had a fairly tough schedule losing only once all year to a solid Colony team. D Ranch gets another W here with a late score.
Diamond Ranch 21 San Dimas 14
Don Lugo (2-6) at West Covina (7-1)
Don Lugo has an explosive offense and is going to be a team that will make some noise over the next couple of years. The Conquistadores problems have been on the defensive side of the ball. West Covina will do what it usually does. The Bulldogs will pound it until they wear you out. And they’ve been doing it with success this year winning seven of eight games. West Covina moves to 8-1.
West Covina 38 Don Lugo 17

@Whit
Tell them to not even show up then. Most boring game of my life lol
It’s a decimated team with a plethora of injured kids, hard to compete with open enrollment high even at full strength.
@TheRanch18
Damn man your boys didn’t even play hard tonight, what gives? Was expecting more of a fight but it’s all good. By the way what size shirt were you wearing? 7xl?
Lmao you guys are just old and bitter. There’s no coaches that are tanking. You’re seriously clueless. Coaches may not run it up it up on a team, but no one is trying to lose a game. Colony, Northview, Arlington all Champs and tried to win every game.
Arroyo was placed in D11 but Singiser called CIF so they could add the forfeits and those losses placed them in D12. That same year Rosemead was placed in D11. The year after the CIF title Arroyo was better but they lost in the first round of D10.
@knights
Historically you are are correct Arroyo is usually bigger and more physical not the case this year. SEM is more stout up front so I actually think arroyo is gonna have to bring someone else in the box to stop the run. If they do that SEM can beat through the air. I think whoever gets off to the better start is winning this game especially SEM. They absolutely need to start fast or it could get ugly.
Here’s a crazy idea. Let the teams play and see who wins.No “ifs, ands or buts” needed.
I think everyone can agree that South definitely played a cupcake schedule. But the energy needs to be kept the same for other teams. If we’re talking about an easy schedule how come no one ever brings up the CUPCAKE road Arroyo had to their CIF championship a few years back. They went 8–3 in 2015 but had to forfeit some games, go 13-2 the next season and get put in D-12?!? Should have easily been a D-10 team if it weren’t for those forfeits. It is what it is but we just need to keep the same energy across the board.
@Sports Man,
You’re thinking of the old system when divisions were based on previous year’s results. In that case, no coaches didn’t tank. But in this new system, where the division you are placed in is determined by the same season’s calpreps rating, then definitely coaches have and will continue to tank especially when they know they have clinched a playoff spot. There is a very well respected local coach who went on to win a CIF championship by doing this a couple of years ago.
Agree to disagree good sir. I would suggest moving on the system doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. Maybe this year our coaches we’ll figure it out I’m tired of losing 1st round
Agree with your general sentiment , that’s why I say league is more important than CIF now. But CIF compels these types of thoughts ….:
You are talking about last year , two teams in different leagues that played each other early in the season but still you prove my point .
SM was SG big no league win last year . Still they were placed in D12 while SG gifted top slot in D13 . Why ? Because SG tanked in league games vs Schurr, BG and Montebello barely eking out playoff spot in OT vs Mighty Moors ….
This put them in D13 . I would say both teams were very close and if SG played better in league they would have been D12 and rocked in first round by Arroyo or some other decent squad .
My point is to illustrate the randomness of CIF , not to devalue the accomplishments of SG last year.
No pushovers ????
This must be Myopic Valley League commentary lol, gave up 60 + to Rosemead
I’ve been doubting the south for a cool minute. Arroyo dominates on Friday! Aside from a broken play here or there it’s gonna be tough sledding for the birdies. The passing game is very elementary but they have a good weapon which the pass game look better than it is. QB throws a nice a ball but he’s prone to throwing ints he’s not mobile at all so what’s he do Vs pressure? We will pick him at least once. And the run game is decent it’s been feasting on bad teams who are playing coverage. On Friday the front 6 will take care of the run and those dinks and dunks then force the birdies to throw and that’s when the mistakes will happen
El Monte beats Mt View by two scores 35-21
@Ziggy not sure how many Arroyo games you’ve attended but they’re not big, They’re fundamentally sound and somewhat physical. They do gang tackle, they have mainly more skill players all around. I actually think a team with physical lineman and some misdirection and speed can defeat Arroyo. a Schurr High School type, if you catch my drift. unfortunately the MVL has no teams like Schurr. Good Luck SEM, hopefully you don’t get exposed with your soft pre-season schedule.
Detached Observer
October 17, 2023 – 8:16 am | Permalink how about little evidence supporting your claim? I know this could happen, but are you suggesting a ‘loss is better in some situations? I agree a little, but would never lose for a better draw! ?? Ha maybe if last game in league start all underclassmen
D O? it is not what us bloggers want DO! I suggest those who claim a good head coach is ‘going to lose on purpose ( dont know how because I have never , ever heard of this type of strategy ) just have no clue about high school football! One of the most ridiculous statements I ever saw! ‘
A head coach looking at next seasons CIF division placement instead of a
TEAM WIN! no clue ! Ever consider 2nd place is a pretty good finish? What if a few players ‘catch on that head coach’ not prepare as usual? No clue
Arroyo vs South El Monte
Two great games this week in the MVL, Cross town rivalry week. SEM has enough talent to pull it off, Arroyo is the measuring team in the MVL. I honestly dont know whos gonna win, Don’t doubt the South they say so, prove us wrong. Great game.
Mtn.View vs El Monte
CIF playoff implications for both teams, Mtn. View hasn’t been to the playoffs since Fall of 1997. El Monte went last year. On top of that its a rivalry game so there’s gonna be bragging rights on the line. May the best team win. I think El Monte Lions pulls away in the 2nd half, but don’t count the Vikings out they’re no pushovers. Let the best team win.
@cabbie You hit the nail on the head Its mental thing with SEM when it comes to Arroyo. One could argue Gallardo had at least equal talent to Arroyo in in 16/17 and 17/18 years and still came up short. Arroyo is big and physical and will try to make the Eagles one dimensional and if that happens its over! SEM has a good passing and a decent run game but neither are dominant the strength is the balance. If the Eagles can be balanced they can win but The Knights do have the uglies to take one of them away. Can SEM win some one on one battles will be the key. Dont discount special teams being a factor as well.
FBFan only worst kind of coach will lose to stay in weaker division
Detached Observer Any coach who thinks this way sucks
FROM SPORTSPSYCOLOGYTIPS.COM ” Maybe what priority life skills coach passionately teaches players, both individually and as ‘team’, will result in much success with winning too. I suggest, not claiming to know it all (so please don’t accuse me) many head coaches and assistants just teach position fundamentals. The best coaches inspire student athletes, and they may never be forgotten
FROM SPORTSPSYCOLOGYTIPS.COM or what coach failed to teach important life skills? Do you think most ??? I dont know, just asking! Think most head coaches in SGV are inspiring? Actually, based on my observation, NO
If coach Chuck is again roaming the sidelines, even in an unofficial capacity, it will be enough to energize the Knights into a win at the swamp. I don’t see how the man can stay home on Friday.
I would agree with most of you what you said. SEM has played a lot of bad football teams and I would agree the 2017 team would beat this years Eagles team pretty easily. But does that mean this SEM team beats Arroyo this year?
Yes Grim, as you have said it’s shaping up to be another wild and wacky finish in the Rio Hondo. I think LC/SP is going to be a shoot out, just like last year. Then that last game of the season between Mow Town and SM will be crucial to the final standings. FYI, I hear that SP is going to pay tribute to their former RHL legendary coach Ray Soleri before their game. Soleri passed away this past March. SP already named their stadium after him. RHL was so fortunate back in the 60’s to have Ray and then follow up in the 70’s with legendary TC coach Bob Hitchcock. What a great 20 year span to watch football in RHL.
Anonymous: Tell us the Story how ER turned you so bitter?
why do you hate ER so much? LOL…. LOSER
As the great Steve Emtman said, “Football is 80% mental and 40% physical.” If SEM can get over the mental hump of playing Arroyo, they’ve got a chance! But it’s been a long time since SEM beat Arroyo. Not since 2012 when SEM was the MVL champ under Aguilar. Before that, SEM beat Arroyo 4 years in a row in 05, 06, 07, 08, under Escamilla. Both Aguilar and Escamilla always had tough preseason schedules. Can Gallardo get his first win over Arroyo? Let’s
RE Rio Hondo
as of now a three way tie is in play. But there are steps to get to that outcome.
1. SP has to beat LC.. LC has shown ability but has had disastrous collapses in the past two weeks. They could have easily beaten both Monrovia and SM. So SP is no walkover win, if LC decides it has some staying power. An LC victory puts SP into third place and maybe a tie with LC that will put them in 4th place with a head to head lose to LC. So SP can be anywhere from first to 4th. LC could make playoffs as a low seed.
2. SM Monrovia becomes the lynch pin to first place .. IF SM wins, game over and if SP beats LC Monrovia is third place and SP is 2nd and SM is #1
If SM loses to Monrovia there is a 3 way tie (if SP beats LC) and every team has beaten other teams so the head to head goes bye bye. SP may have the inside track on point differential as they beat the crap out of Monrovia, and we cannot assume SM will do the same even if they win. Monrovia can roll up a score and potentially make their 28 point loss to SP go away? SM barely beat SP so point differential is poor for them. SM could end up third and Monrovia 1st, saving many Monrovia boosters from replaying the end of the Frankenstein movie coming with burning torches and pitchforks to run their coach out of town on a rail.. (there is already talk here on this page about getting rid of coach(es) in MowTown) or jumping off some bridge for having lost the league for the first time in forever.
So there you have it SP LC SM and M can go to the playoffs or not and come in anywhere from 1st to 4th… based on results on the field and or by some computation.. more will be known after this Fri when LC and SP play.
Not personally familiar with ‘17 team , but looking at CalPreps and schedule they would crush this team. A lot has happened in high school football and particularly the MVL since then …::SEM has a nice team and then answered every question , but their schedule is replete with D14 also rans . Arroyo had difficult time outside of MVL but clearly the best team SEM has seen this far. Coaches say a lot of things before a big game lol
There is an example of this you don’t have to speak in hypothetical’s . Would you rather be San Marino that gets knocked out in d12 1st round, or be San Gabriel who wins division 13? who’s the better team?
Well they played each other and San Gabriel beat them. So I guess it isn’t so black and white there’s nuance to everything.
Look at Get Back Coach! The old staff comes back and all of a sudden he’s got a chip on his shoulder again! I heard you almost quit a few weeks ago. Talking about “the kids just don’t listen. I tell them to get stand behind the line and they just don’t care.”
Well, your old daddy is back and Arroyo’s now the favorite. It’s gonna be a great game. One of the best in the rivalry. Just remember Get Back Coach, Arroyo doesn’t always beat SEM. Escamilla had Singiser’s number for a while.
The old school staff makes the difference. Arroyo will make less mistakes and SEM will make more than usual. Arroyo 31 SEM 21.
Just a reminder that you haven’t been hit until you’ve been hit by the Ranch. HAHA bunch of payasos
South El Monte Vs Arroyo for all the marbles!
Big brother Vs little brother can the Eagles get over the hump. Gallardo said this is his most talented team which is saying a lot considering 17 and 18 they went to the semifinals back to back. But those teams pretty much ran through one player, this Eagles team is much more balanced much harder to prepare for. Plus they have Beltran running the defense a luxury those 17 &18 teams didn’t have. Arroyo is Arroyo they are gonna be the best team by far SEM has faced all year @Friday Knights is correct in the fact that it’s put up or shut up time we are about to find out what SEM is made of heck SEM is about to find out what they’re made of. Bonafide contender or pretender who was eating off a weak non league schedule?
SEM has to start fast score first or it will be a long night. Arroyo will make it a battle of the trenches. I’m going SEM to win in a low scoring game 21-14. Would it be an upset?
Lol only so much a coaching staff can do … who’s out there playing them or the kids sem on top
Sure…. cool, but you didn’t answer the question that has been intimated by the SG faithful
Plenty of great men come out of all programs if it involves good ol football. I think we can agree on that. As for SG, I think there was a whole post about how they lost in State but showed great class. These are young men that need to be supported not scrutinized. Have met Donald and he is a leader within the Rosemead community. I think we should focus on the positives.
I’ll take ER and 60. It’s my way of showing character, courage and commitment.
I can assure you their focus is playing football the right way. They coach their kids up, and teach them how to be great people. The Coaches and players are humble. Anything said otherwise is probably not even from SG. It’s probably someone trying to make us sound bad.
Not many “great “ men coming out of sg Bernard. This goes back to their finals team. I guess our definition of what a great man is is relative… or sg’s expectations are pretty low.
That is a noble and lofty goal , Mr Denard….a goal appropriate for all programs . I am not familiar with SG program , only saw them once over the summer in 7×7 which is not their forte.
My comments only based on previous posts by SG boosters/ parents …. Would you rather win and earn second place in league , lose early D12 or lose vs BG go D13 and win CIF ?
Which would be the better team ?
Here we are out or shut up time. Let me just remind everyone Arroyo won 43-0 last year! That is still on the minds of the Eagles add that up with Arroyo always whoops on SEM. Too much to handle Arroyo 34-17 also if SEM doesn’t get this win Next year Arroyo isn’t going this is the only shot SEM has to win.
Now that the old staff is back at Arroyo I’m taking the Knights! 35-24.
Peterson,
San Dimas – Diamond Ranch game was moved to Thursday night.
From T. Peterson: Thanks. I fixed it.
SG has one goal. Make the players into Great Men. Anybody who tries to twist that doesn’t know the program and is probably a troll.
Deatched Observer,
Hit the nail on the head! High School Football is not what it used to be.
As Thomas Sowell once said: “Equity is the theft of human potential.”
That a good one Tig!
Wondering about the SG v BG situation? Previous posts would indicate the SG coaching philosophy would not want to win and take a chance of moving up to D12 ; lose and you are secure at the top of D13 where they “ peaked” last year. After all it’s all about CIF, right ?
Seriously, it’s crazy that a lot of teams that have secured playoff spots are in the situation where winning places them in more ( sometimes much more ) difficult situation for playoffs .
CIF run vs league title which would you rather have ?????
That’s why I say CIF title run doesn’t mean what it used to

As a coach, your words can have a lasting impact on your players. Not everything you say will be helpful in the present moment, but in the future, your players may remember what you taught them and apply it to their lives
