Game Night: CIF Playoffs – 2nd Round

All Kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated:

Friday November 10

DIV 5

Bonita (9-2) at Thousand Oaks (8-3)

Bonita survived Round one last week against Northview. Now they have another tough game at Thousand Oaks. Thousand Oaks finished in a three-way tie for first in the tough Canyon League and has won five straight games. It will be a battle for the Bearcats especially on the road. But somehow, some way they find a way to get it done. Bonita advances.

Bonita 24 Thousand Oaks 21

DIV 7

Agoura (7-3) at Muir (8-3)

Muir showed how far it has come from Week 1 with the big win over Diamond Ranch last week. The Mustangs are at full strength and ready to make another deep run. Things only get harder as you advance in the post season but Muir looks to be up to the challenge. Agoura will be a hard out but the Stangs get it done in the end.

Muir 28 Agoura 27

DIV 8

Covina (9-2) at Charter Oak (3-8)

Maybe the best game of the second round. Charter Oak and Covina are in the same city but you can’t call it a rivalry because they haven’t met since 2001. It’s a surprise that the Chargers made the playoffs after a 2-8 season but here they are as an at large team in Division 8. Last week they took care of North (Torrance) while Covina beat Summit. Don’t let the 3-8 record fool you. The Chargers have some dudes and in this Division are capable of a run. If Covina avoids turnovers and can make some stops on defense the Colts have a great opportunity. It will come down to the fourth quarter but the Chargers “new season” continues. CO makes a big play down the stretch and holds on.

Charter Oak 31 Covina 28

DIV 9

Rio Hondo Prep (10-1) at Orange (7-4)

Rio Hondo Prep will run left, run and right and run up the middle. And if that doesn’t work the Kares will run it some more. They have the horses to do it. Noah Penunuri and Nate Curtis are both tougher than a three-dollar steak. They both rushed for over 100 yards last week in the win over St. Margaret’s. Orange hails from the Orange Coast League and is coming off of a 19-12 win over Diamond Bar last week. The Kares will pound it again and eventually wear down their opponent again. Kares advance.

Rio Hondo Prep 27 Orange 20

DIV 10

West Covina (9-2) at Beckman (9-2)

West Covina did not throw the ball last week in the win over Paloma Valley, not once. But that’s what the Bulldogs do and they do it well. Zander Requena and West Co run over Beckman and into the Semis.

West Covina 28 Beckman 17

DIV 11

Cantwell (9-2) at Westminster (8-3)

My apologies to Cantwell head coach Eddie Ficklin Jr. OC Eric Elias and the entire Cantwell-Sacred Heart staff. I’ve picked against you several times this year and several times you have proved me wrong. Your defense has been solid and your offense does what takes to win. I won’t be fooled again. You convinced me. The Cardinals beat Westminster and advance.

Cantwell 20 Westminster 17

DIV 12

Coachella Valley (5-6) at Don Lugo (5-6)

Scoreboard operators better be on their toes in this one. This is going to be a shootout. Don Lugo has been in several high scoring affairs this year and Coachella Valley put up 46 on South El Monte last week. Somebody has to make a stop. Coachella Valley makes one more and holds on.

Coachella Valley 41 Don Lugo 38

DIV 14

Hawthorne (5-6) at El Monte (5-6)

Another one where they will be lighting up the scoreboard. The El Monte game last week had an Arena Football League feel to it as the Lions outlasted Bishop Montgomery 55-50. Hawthorne can score as well, but has also displayed defensive prowess at times. The Cougars will need this to be one of those times to get by the Lions. Expect several lead changes in a back and forth contest with Hawthorne making the last stand.

Hawthorne 42 El Monte 35

    3 and out,

Anything t La Serna accomplishes from here on out is a success. Would their players and coaches be disappointed if they lost next week to Culver City? Sure. But come on man, they’re a top end program in the MVS.

As judging Medrano? Let his ‘scientific statistical data , (wins and losses percentage over his total career do talking) speak for his coaching ability. I think all bull s/// means zero

Maverick Man some of these ‘self appointed geniuses’ blogging have no idea! Exemplary, as you know because you have a brain that i working! Suggesting La Serna’s season is gone if they do not win it all? Maybe they get their kicks acting like an ex athlete, when never played nothing? LS is pretty darn good , yet better be very, very very good to get past few teams they need to beat include: Santa Barbara beat St paul i think. Capistrano valley, Trabuco Hills, Loyola and More good teams. The guy is ???

Very hard to get even one D championship. Check out the CIF website. Not many MVS schools listed. Historically you see Los Altos, South Hills, West Covina, El Rancho,La Serna HH Wilson. Even Bishop Amat I did not see or St. Francis,Glendra or other big programs. Very hard and a lot of great coaches don’t have even one.

Your team must have been a 1 and out.
A division 4 championship for LS would be a great accomplishment. We still have a long way to go and we don’t underestimate any opponent.

Do you have one ounce or basic knowledge who LS must beat to win CIF ? I suggest Zero knowledge / area intelligence ? LS is not competing in D 10 or 14 !
To win it all they must go through Downey ( or Warren ), or several other clubs with very very good background ! If Downey , well has LS ever beat Downey ? Look it up

I want to see Singiser go to Mt View, Gab, or Keppel, and see how great of a coach he is and turn a program like those around. If he’s that good. Just saying.

Here goes nothing. I didn’t do too well last week:

Thousand Oaks over Bonita (I think both Bonita and Northview were too high)
    Muir over Agoura
CO over Covina- CO should not be in the playoffs but will win a CIF title. Gotta love the new system
    Orange over RHP
    WC over Beckman
    Westminster over Cantwell
Don Lugo over Coachella Valley- Now’s the time to capitalize on the hype. I called this a while back.
    El Monte over Hawthorne
    Warren over Oak Hills
    La Serna over Trabuco Hills
    Mayfair over Chino
    SF over Arrowhead
BP over Desert Hot Springs- See Don Lugo, although I didn’t call this.
    Ocean View over Bell Gardens
Whittier Christian over Lynwood- Haven’t we seen this playoff game the last few years?

He has put his team In the playoffs 5/7 seasons not counting covid season 2020 that didn’t have playoffs, he’s had 2 quarterfinal runs, a semi final run in 2018, had a 9-2 season and got the team all the way into the D7 playoffs in 2021 when the new playoff system started. During this stint he’s had multiple All CIF QB’s, RB’s OL, DL give or take about 20, multiple All Area selections, multiple Del Rio League MVP’s. He can’t control that the juggernaut LS is in the Del Rio League, all he can do is coach his players up and accomplish what he has with whoever shows up. He’s doesn’t recruit kids from other schools and coaches up whoever shows up, if you think someone else can do better please name that person.

The notion that a head coach (Argo) could be taking advice or direction from somebody else is just as ludicrous as the notion that a president (Biden) could be taking advice or direction from somebody else. In other words, bank on it.

@Tim in regards to Singiser you keep saying he’s done but he can’t seem to stay away from the gridiron. He’s up in the booth play calling being a coach with headphones. So which is it? Is he back part time?

You’re joking right? Coach Medrano is one of the best coaches in the area. El Rancho would make the biggest mistake if they ever parted ways with Medrano. Not only is he a great coach, but an even better person.

No we don’t need new leadership, we have a well established program that has had tons of success under coach Medrano. If you don’t like how your kids season ended make him work harder, get in the weight room, put on his cleats and get to work, if that’s not an option then hit the road jack.

I’ve yet to talk to one alumnus or ER person who wants medrano fired or says anything negative about him or his program. He has haters from salty ex er parents who left to other schools. Medrano has been and continues to be one of the top head coaches in the area, El Rancho is privileged to have a coach and staff of that caliber.

The sentiments of Sad Alumni is exactly what Detached Observer is talking about in another thread and why coaches don’t make it much longer than 5 years. If Medrano were to get out at 5 or 7 years as suggested by Lou Holtz in DO’s other post, he would be thought of as a great coach and innovator for El Rancho and would even have many offers from other schools. Instead, he has stayed loyal which only makes people say he should be fired after a bad year and also doesn’t help his prospects to land another job. It’s weak, but it’s the world we live in.

When Tim names his coach of the year in a few weeks, I would hope he gives serious consideration to the job done by first year man Ryan Bateman of Santa Fe. If this man’s efforts don’t constitute the most remarkable in our area, I can’t imagine what does.
