Joe Torosian

Good Afternoon!

I’ve always had good dealings with Ted Clarke, I’m sorry to see him leave Monrovia…

***

Oh, I have always been a Sam Bradford fan…

***

“We’re getting better, I know the score last week doesn’t reflect it,” said Temple City HC Mike McFarland. “That’s (Arcadia) a good football team. The floodgates opened and we couldn’t get them shut.”

Asked McFarland about the beating his offensive line is taking. “We’re real raw and that needs to develop and will over time.”

McFarland cited the excellent play of linebacker Tim Sanderson and running back Josh Simangunsong. He also said running back Jamie Dea, out since getting hurt in the Arroyo game, hopes to be back in action this week against South El Monte.

***

Last Add Temple City: Since 2007 the Rams, in the first three weeks of the season, have gone a combined 1-10-1.

***

For What It’s Worth: The Arroyo defense had some nice moments Friday night against Hart. It doesn’t look that way scoreboard wise, but they did. Now they get a week off to get healed up and prepare for a solid La Canada team…

***

Spotted LC HC Dan Yoder at Keegan Stadium Saturday night…Don’t know if he should be applauded for working hard and scouting…or finding a parking spot…

***

Was Azusa overwhelming against Gabrielino? For three quarters…no. But they won, and they always seem to do that.

***

Have I mentioned how much I dig fantasy football these days?

***

No truth the rumor that Bell Gardens is considering a Two-Threee-Zone after its 56-46 shootout with Cantwell this weekend.

***

Cantwell…again. The Cardinals are 3-0, beating Schurr, Baldwin Park, and BG, and in two weeks they play Whittier Christian. They should be eligible for an at-large birth in Mid-Valley Division playoffs.

Running back Jonathan Mesa is averaging 9-yards a carry and has picked up 690 yards on the season to go with 11 touchdowns. This means he is very good.

***

There were several times Saturday night the feeling came over me Maranatha was done against Salesian. They just kept punching and got the win against a talented Mustang squad.

If Chris Cornell is not a “Bad Dude” deluxe, then there is no such thing as a “Bad Dude”…

Yes the Minutemen are young, but don’t kid yourself…they are capable of winning now…Emphasis on the “capable”…

Last Add Maranatha: Put Trent Washington on the “Bad Dude” list as well…and give some consideration to Isaiah Braithwaite.

If BCS rankings were in effect in CIF, Bonita’s stock would have climbed considerably after San Dimas’ victory over Monrovia and Claremont’s victory over Rowland.

Four games into the 2009 season the Bearcats gave up 98 points, but four contests into 2010 they have only allowed 52 points.

Linebacker Eric Mikity is leading BoHi in tackles and sacks in what, so far, has been an amazing season.

***

Bonita One More Time: Is Greg Spathias the next Drew Brees? No. Has Spathias been extremely productive and done an excellent job? Amen and preach it brother!

***

I agree with Bill Zernickow, San Dimas has a long way to go. They came back, they kept focus in the second half against Monrovia…but it was the Saints poor play that put them in behind the eight ball to begin with…

A lot of folks have tried to convince me Codee Watts isn’t all that…well he may not be pretty…but he is all that…and tough.

Reminder: The next “Mid Valley Draft” is this February, 2010. Staffers, friends, and fans of Mid Valley Sports will adopt an NFL team and draft players out of the local Southeast and Mid-Valley Divisions. Last season the St. Louis Rams took Whittier Christian’s Jeff Worthy with the first overall pick.

This year, since I serve as the Rams General Manager, I will be taking a big time receiver to complement my suddenly Hall of Fame bound quarterback. The receiver I’m taking? Kevin Kolbeck, San Dimas.

Kolbeck’s ability alone makes the Delaware Wing/Triple Option/Zernickow Zip a passing offense.

***

What about Shawn Kennedy? I don’t know, I have seen him in civilian clothes wearing his jersey at both SD games I’ve been too this year.

***

The Mid: “Coach how is this victory over St. Margaret’s going to affect your team in regards to keeping focus?”

Whittier Christian HC Sergio Gradilla: “We’re gonna find out Monday.”

***

On this date in 1969, as the retiring Don Drysdale was being honored at Dodger Stadium, Temple City’s Sam Nicassio three touchdown passes and ran for another in the Rams 34-0 victory over Claremont at Citrus College. Larry Mushinkie scored on a 2-yard run in the win.

***

Any time Michael Vick’s throws three touchdowns to only one running, he’s a frontline NFL starter. Better to be a mobile quarterback than a running quarterback.

***

“We’re going to go right at them,” says Burbank HC Hector Valencia about this Friday’s game against Muir. “We’re not going to win anything if we allow them dictate. This game is going to set the tone for the Pacific.”

Valencia didn’t buy into the argument about the Bulldogs having defensive issues, especially the 36 scored by San Gabriel. “We’re okay. We had four plays we screwed up on. It’s not like they moved up and down the field on us.”

***

Got contacted asking me about a Wilson player hitting an official during the Wildcats 36-20 win over La Puente.

“Not true,” said Wilson HC Brian Zavala.

***

On this date in 1985 La Canada kicker Denny Kouri kicked a 22-yard field goal late to give the Spartans a 16-15 victory over St. Francis. Rob Myers and Wen Stephenson added a pair of 2-yard touchdown runs for LC.

On the same night, in the same year, Monrovia got a 16-yard touchdown run from Craig Brown in the second quarter at Los Altos. The Wildcats carried the lead into the fourth quarter before the Conquerors rallied when Darren DeSpain hit Jim Snider on a 5-yard scoring pass to tie it. Victor Rosalez won it fo LA with a 21-yard field goal.

I actually saw George Blanda play football for the Oakland Raiders when I was a kid. Saw him throw a touchdown pass against the Dallas Cowboys in 1974 so I always felt kindly towards him.

When the news came today that he died I read the story on Yahoo, but was put out with a particular fact. Blanda, who entered the NFL in 1949, retired before the 1976 season true…but what the story on Yahoo didn’t mention was that Blanda was cut by the Raiders in favor of another kicker, Fred Steinfort.

Oakland won the Super Bowl in 1976 but the kicker was Errol Mann…Steinfort was cut midseason.

***

Finally I remember watching an episode of Happy Days…probably around 1974 I think…and Richie,Ralph, and Potsie are watching the Bears and Packers play a football game.

The Bears quarterback throws an interception and Richie, frustrated, says: “This is terrible why don’t the Bears play their back up quarterback?”

“Come on Rich,” Ralph says. “That guy is too old, he’s a has-been.”

“No, no,” Richie corrects. “I’m telling you George Blanda has two or three more good years left in him.”

Of course the story was set in the late 1950’s and Blanda played through the 1975 season…Really amazing.

***

On this date in 1991 while Arroyo beat Pomona at Bergstrom 28-16 thanks in part to John Mendivil’w 56-yard touchdown catch from halfback D.J. Hoyt….At the same time a few miles away Mt. View was hosting Mayfair and took a 10-3 decision from the Monsoons. Jose Martinez shined at quarterback for the Vikings.

Stay thirsty my friends…
