Game Night Week Four: Southeast Division

Andy Villanueva

Thursday, September 30th

PACIFIC
Hoover (1-2) vs. Burroughs (0-3) at Glendale HS

Last Year: Burroughs 45-7

Since 2006: Burroughs leads series 4-0

Tough part of Tornadoes schedule as Pacific League play begins. A.J. Pule will need another stellar performance against a much better defense in the Indians. Pule can run or throw and has two good receivers in Jaime Pina and Dymond Mcrae.

Burroughs quarterback Lucas Yanez will rely on the legs of Zander Anding. Yanez does have a good receiver in Matt Volland.

The game will come down to defense. The Indians have also faced much stronger competition in facing three Santa Clarita teams.

HACIENDA
Diamond Ranch (1-3) vs. Diamond Bar (4-0) at Ganesha HS

This game will be a good barometer for how good the Brahmas are. The Panthers finally put everything together with a win against Chaffey.

Jacoby Carter and Chase Price must carry the load until quarterback Cesar Carrillo becomes more confident. Carter and Price are two bruising backs that will try and keep possession for Diamond Ranch.

After winning just one game in 2009, Diamond Bar has quadrupled their total. Andrew Cameron leads the pass happy Brahmas with eight touchdown passes. Three targets in George Katrib, Josh Viloria and Chris Carter will keep the Panthers defense secondary busy.

Diamond Ranch 28-21

West Covina (2-1) at Walnut (3-1)

Last Meeting: West Covina 31-11

Since 2002: West Covina leads series 6-2

Now in the new Hacienda league, both teams know each other quite well from the San Antonio League.

The Bulldogs will run it down the throat of any defense. Chris Soloman and B.J. Lee are the usual running backs for West Covina, but Jimmy Frazier and Charles Tucker also get touches.

George Johnson manages the game as well as anyone at quarterback.

The Mustangs fired on all cylinders against Covina last Friday night. Brandon Roach showed why is picked to compete in the Hacienda with five touchdowns. Aubrey Coleman and Jason Tsukada are Roach’s primary receivers and each accounted for two touchdowns in the win last week.

PACIFIC
Arcadia (1-2) at Pasadena (1-2)

Last Meeting: Pasadena 19-14

Since 2001: Arcadia leads series 8-1

There is no shortage of putting up points for the Apaches at the beginning of 2010. Last week, Arcadia jumped on the Rams for 42 and you can expect them to come out use all their weapons. Myles Carr is gaining confidence under center and Taylor Legace is his prime target with 16 receptions.

In 2009, the Bulldogs shocked the Apaches on the road. This is a different team with Brandon Cox and Cleo Bates getting the majority of the carries.

Arcadia 21-14

Burbank (1-2) at Muir (1-2)

Last Meeting: Burbank 29-28 (2OT)

Since 2006: Muir leads series 3-1

Last season’s match-up was nothing short of spectacular with the Bulldogs shocking the Mustangs. Adam Colman is having a good senior season at quarterback with five touchdown passes. Ulises Ochoa will need to have a great game rushing the ball and returning kicks. Quortney Brazier fills in nicely to give Ochoa a spell.

Muir is starting to resemble a MASH unit as Jeffrey Davis and Danny Huerta appear to be ready to return. Those two returning would be a huge boost in the arm for the Mustangs. If Davis does return, Kevon Seymour will become a target again and Destiny Iwuoma can be his second option. Tairen Owens is leading the team in rushing early in the season.

SUBURBAN
Mayfair (1-3) vs. Norwalk (2-2) at Bellflower HS

Last Meeting: Norwalk 28-7

Since 2001: Mayfair leads 8-1

Much needed win last week for the Monsoons who could have been heading into Suburban League play 0-4. Dominque Small is proving to be a very reliable running back with 505 yards and two touchdowns. Evan Hunko is starting to find his rhythm and has thrown for three touchdowns.

After meeting some beasts in the Orange County, the Lancers are starting to find their stride. Elijhaa Penny is near healthy and will be a boost in the arm the offense needs. The offensive line will open up holes for Penny.

Warren (1-3) vs. La Serna (3-1) at California HS

Last Meeting: Warren 55-20

Since 2006: Series tied 2-2

The Bears have had some tough competition with a loss to Burbank on the docket. Only win came against Santa Fe. Jamil Magee continues to run the ball with abandon with 583 yards.

Signature-win for the Lancers against La Mirada was huge. O.J. Medina is shifty and can make good players look bad. Andrew Buenrostro manages the offense to near perfection. When on defense, watch for Craig Jones who is a ball-hawk.

La Serna 24-21

Santa Fe (1-2) at Charter Oak (2-2)

Chiefs face the daunting task of battling former Southeast two-time champion Chargers after not being able to stop the ground attack against Esperanza. Justin Rincon has been ineffective at quarterback after winning the job in the summer. Alex Mirola is only averaging 42 yards per game.

Kurt Scoby has emerged as the heir apparent to Adam Muema at running back. Travis Santiago is having a good season passing the ball to Dennis Rufus and Chris Gilcrest.
