Game Night Week Four: Mid-Valley Division

Tim Peterson

Thursday September 30

Monrovia (1-2) at South Hills (1-2)

The Huskies aren’t the Huskies teams that we’ve seen in the past. Last week it got really ugly in a 59-6 rout at Tesoro. This followed the beating that was administered by West Covina.

Monrovia let one get away last week against San Dimas. The Wildcats can either use that for motivation or let it bring them down. I think it will be the former. M-Town survives a close call.

Friday October 1

Azusa (3-0) at La Puente (2-1)

Last Year: Azusa 50-21

La Puente might be the only team that can prevent Azusa from a perfect regular season. The Warriors were beaten last week by a solid Wilson team but running back Jose Perez still had over 100 yards. LP will need to control the clock, establish the ground game and keep the Azusa offense off the field to have a chance.

The two quarterback system of Jose Nunez and Jake Martinez is working for the Aztecs. LP pushes but Azusa has enough in the end.

Pomona (3-1) at Baldwin Park (0-4)

Last Year: Baldwin Park 33-12

The Braves need a win. What better time to get one than in the Valle Vista league opener against Pomona? The Braves have scheduled up in the hopes that it would pay off come league time. Now it’s time to prove it was worth the struggle.

Pomona was ripped last week but Chino Hills has a tendency to do that to people. The Red Devils battle but BP gets its first.

Alhambra (2-2) at South Pasadena (3-0)

Last Year: Alhambra 30-6

The Tigers have been perfect so far but have taken some heat for a soft schedule. Quarterback Conor Bednarski has performed well for South Pas while Matt Nelson has also been solid.

Alhambra got off to a rough start but has rebounded to win its last two. Tigers remain undefeated.

Bell Gardens (1-2) at San Marino (2-1)

San Marino looked like a team that really missed Kwame Do in the loss to Rosemead. Morgan Myers filled in and did a good job but the Titans lacked explosiveness. Their offense was shut out with their only score coming on a 90 yard kick off return by Devontae Young.

BG was blitzed by Azusa but then bounced back to beat El Rancho. Last week the Lancers lost a 56-46 shootout to a good Cantwell team.

This one is a toss up. The Titans have the advantage at home.

Maranatha (3-1) at La Canada (2-1)

This is one you don’t want to miss. Both teams are putting points on the board. The Spartans are coming off a 38-34 loss to high powered Crescenta Valley while the Minutemen beat Salesian 29-28 on a two point conversion late in the fourth quarter.

Nice Mid-Valley matchup – these two could meet again down the road.

Maranatha battles but La Canada holds on late.

San Gabriel (1-3) at Rosemead (2-1)

Last Meeting: 1981: San Gabriel 16-6

All-Time: Rosemead 9-6

San Gabriel just needed to get in the win column and did exactly that in a win over Contreras last week. For Rosemead it was important to rebound from a beating they took the week before at Rowland and the Panthers responded with a 14 point win over San Marino.

It appears Andy Guerrero has now claimed the starting quarterback position for the Mats. It worked last week. The SG defense will have to stop Matt Fregoso to win. San Marino couldn’t. I don’t think the Matadors can either.

Temple City (0-3) at South El Monte (1-2)

This would have been a nice match up four years ago. This year it’s almost an after thought. The Rams are still seeking their first while The Eagles got a win two weeks ago over Workman but lost last week to Nogales.

The Rams are having trouble on the O-line. Last week against Arcadia Mike Quintanilla was running for his life. If the Eagles bring the heat up front it could be another long night for TC.

El Monte (1-2) at Wilson (2-1)

Wilson is on a roll. All weapons have been on display the last two weeks in big victories over Los Altos and La Puente. The Lions lost to La Puente earlier this year but did get their first win over G-Stone last Thursday night.

El Monte might hang early but Wilson’s athletes will be too much over the course of four quarters. Wildcats win their third straight.

San Dimas (2-2) at Nogales (1-3)

If Nogales can get a big game from quarterback Keith Bolden and running back Patrick Miranda can chew up some yardage while the defense gets some stops…who am I kidding? San Dimas rolls.

If the Saints can come from three touchdowns behind to beat Monrovia they won’t have any trouble with the Nobles. Codee Watts, Jordan Taylor and the gang will put up big numbers.

San Dimas 45 Nogales 14
