Burroughs Runs Away From Hoover

(Glendale) – Starting the season 0-3 was not what Burroughs Head Coach Keith Knoop had in mind before the beginning of Pacific League play. The Indians fortune turned around quickly with a 57-13 rout of Hoover to start league play.

Zander Anding did all his damage in the first quarter as he had two carries for 130 yards and two touchdowns before the gun went off to end the quarter. Anding finished with 172 yards on the ground and 213 all-purpose yards in just one half of play.

Early on it was apparent that the Tornadoes were in for a long night as Burroughs scored two touchdowns on three plays.

To the credit of Hoover, they answered Anding’s first score with a 13-play drive on A.J. Pule’s run up the middle from 2-yards out.

The only blemish for the Indians came midway through the first quarter when Lucas Yanez fumbled his first carry of the night. It was recovered by Tornados defensive lineman Jim Perez.

The Hoover drive stalled at the Indians 15-yard line and Teodik Zaghian missed a 31-yard field goal attempt to allow the game to be tied at seven.

Starting at the 20-yard line, Anding wasted no time as he took the handoff and burst through a hole for an 80-yard score for his second touchdown of the night.

The Tornados answered back early in the second quarter as Luke Taboyoyong went 67-yards to cut the lead to 14-13. The Indians would come up big on special teams again with a blocked extra point.

That would be all the scoring for Hoover for the remainder of the night with Burroughs defense stepping up big the rest of the way as the Indians scored 43 unanswered points.

Burroughs intercepted Pule in the end zone to stop two successive drives that could have changed the momentum of the game. On the first interception, Matt Voland was one-on-one coverage with Hoover’s Jesse Pina and out-jumped Pina for the ball. The second pick was an underthrown pass in the end zone that Eli Peppmuller jumped in front of.

Offensively, Burroughs couldn’t be stopped after the blocked extra point. Yanez added scores of 41 and 8-yards out, while Anding put an exclamation point on his night with a one-yard dive. The Indians took a 35-13 lead into the half.

It never got better for Hoover in the second half with Luke Coblentz running wild on defense for Burroughs. Coblentz on the same drive sacked Pule and then recovered Taboyoyong’s fumble at the Indians 14-yard line as the Tornadoes were driving for a touchdown.

Yanez ended the night with seven carries and 103 yards with three touchdowns. He also was five of eight for 71 yards passing.

Indians running back Tadeo Zuniga gave Anding the second half off with an impressive 104 yards rushing on seven carries. Zuniga also scored two touchdowns in the second half.

For the night Burroughs closed the night with 449 yards on the ground on 25 carries.
