Joe Torosian

Good Morning!

I’m sure I’m missing a few, but these four guys have stood out filling in for the injured starters…

Whittier Christian: Grant Escobar, playing for Joel Rhone: Escobar has been a receiver by trade, but back to back 100-yard games have proven him as one of the best all around players in the Mid-Valley Division…and he’s only a junior.

Bonita: Greg Spathias, playing for Garrett Pendleton: Pendleton’s return is imminent, but the previously untested Spathias has helped guide the Bearcats to a 4-0 start…and how they build from there is thanks in large part to this back up quarterback’s arm.

Wilson: Josh Morales, playing for Brandon Schreiman: There was a side of me that didn’t want to mention this because of the drama it would encourage…but regardless of fans, parents, and coaches decision, Morales stepped in against Los Altos after Schreiman injured his thumb the previous week and has led the Wildcats to three straight victories.

(I understand debate, but keep it civil)

Arroyo: Eddie Frederico, playing for Steven Rivera: Throw out the Hart game, but against Montebello, the night Rivera went down, Frederico stepped up. The back up quarterback completed 10 of 18 passes for 143 yards and led his team to two fourth quarter touchdowns. One to Hunter Duran and the game winner to Anthony Miller.

I welcome corrections…and input on others who have stepped up due to injury…

Back Track

I failed to mention this from the WestCo-Walnut game on Friday. When Chris Solomon was breaking off one of several double digit runs, he came down the Bulldog sideline and knocked heads with the Mustangs’ Cameron Gonzalez. The Walnut defensive back was bounced out of bounds…and Solomon kept on his way…Impressive.

I’m just gonna guess Chicago will be Mike Martz’s last stop in the NFL as an OC…I’m sure he’ll be coming to a Western Athletic Conference school real soon.

***

Valle Vista front runners will be decided this week with BP at SD and Wilson going to Covina…

One thing I am certain of…win or lose…a good portion of the Wildcat faithful will be upset.

Keith Locklear’s Sierra Vista Dons improved to 4-0 with a 41-6 beat down of Duarte. In the contest Giovanni Rivera and Erik Perez both rushed for over 200-yards. In fact, according to the stats posted on MaxPreps, SV’s Rivera has carried the ball 116 times for 1,111 yards… Spare me the comments about the Dons having not played anybody and the stats being inflated… Just recognize this team is 4-0 for the first time in nearly two decades and give them a tip of your cap.

On this Date in 1985: Arcadia beat Wilson, at home, 29-16. The win was the Apaches first in six tries against the Wildcats as Chris McCarn carried the ball 21 times for 79 yards and two touchdowns for the victors.

On the same night, a little to the west, at North Field Temple City picked up a 20-7 win over Rosemead thanks in part to Paul Buccola’s fumble recovery in the end zone on a bad punt snap.

On this date in 1991 Keppel’s John Franco ran for 273 yards and three touchdowns in the Aztecs 33-6 victory over San Gabriel. The Keppel HC that night is current SG assistant Tony Sumida.

…and on the same night at Excelsior High School, Norwalk got four touchdowns from Derek Blackshire to give the Lancers a 26-20 win over visiting Monrovia. Blackshire, who rushed for 185 yards on 20 carries, scored the game winner on a 15-yard run with three minutes left to play. M-Town highlights included a 90-yard interception return for a touchdown by Ricky Pickens…and a 66-yard halfback option scoring pass from Jason Lowe to quarterback Jose Montanez.

Stay thirsty my friends…
