(Santa Fe Springs)- St. Paul took a two possession game in the first half and exploded for four scores in the second to take 42-7 victory over visiting Schurr Friday night.
The Swordsmen’s David Cabral scored on a 7-yard run in the first quarter and Michael Ortega electrified the crowd with a 34-yard dance to paydirt.
If the Spartans thought they were hanging on, in the second half they got an even heavier dose of an improving/powerful St. Paul squad.
After a Schurr drive ended with Aaron Cantu picked off in the end zone, Ortega rubbed salt in the wound with a 90-yard scoring run to make it 21-0.
Moments the Spartan Abraham Gonzalez went down with a shoulder injury and did not return.
Late in the third Cabral scored easily on a 2-yard run following a Schurr turnover.
Follwing a third straight Spartan turnover (2 INTs and a fumble) Cabral trotted in from 6-yards out for his third touchdown of the game.
With 3:45 to St. Paul blocked a punt which leads to a 4-yard run by Anthony Gonzalez to close the Swordsmen scoring.
Following the kick-off Bradley Powell provided Schurr with its lone highlight, as he squeaked past defenders and broke off an 81-yard touchdown run.
Schurr, now 2-3, travels to Bell Gardens next week to open Almont League play, while St. Paul, 4-1, plays Cathedral in the Mission opener.
