Game Night Mid-Valley Division: Week Seven

Tim Peterson

Thursday October 21

Valle Vista

Baldwin Park (2-4) at Covina (6-1) – Covina District Field

Last Year: Baldwin Park 28-7

The Braves had a bye last week after a huge win over San Dimas the week before. The BP defense was as advertised against the Saints. They will have to make some stops again to beat Billy Livingston and the high powered Colts.

They might hold them for awhile but not all night. Colts gain control of the Valle Vista

Almont

Bell Gardens (3-3) at Montebello (2-4)

Last Year: Bell Gardens 46-40

Suddenly Montebello is the surprise team. The Oilers have won two straight including a huge win last week over San Gabriel in the Almont opener.

BG stayed with Schurr before falling late. The difference will be Steven Ibarra and the Lancers running attack. It will eventually wear down the Oilers.

BG runs to the win.

Schurr (3-3) at Alhambra (4-2) – Moor Field

Last Year: Schurr 28-21

Alhambra has won four straight after losing its first two. But the Moors haven’t seen anything quite like Schurr yet. Josh Mendoza might make some plays early but not enough to disrupt the Spartans.

Aaron Cantu, Abraham Gonzalez and company will have too much. Schurr pulls away in fourth.

Mission Valley

Rosemead (4-2) at Arroyo (5-1)

Last Year: Arroyo 14-12

All-Time Arroyo 33-18

This is the toughest game Arroyo will have for the rest of the season. A win here means the Knights run the MVL table for the second straight year.

Funny thing is Rosemead always rises to the occasion. We knew Matt Fregoso could run but Matt Macias has been throwing the ball too. The Panthers hang around – they always do- but the Knights with Steven Rivera and Anthony Miller get the victory. Will Arroyo run the “Wild Knight?”

South El Monte (1-5) at Mt. View (3-3)

Last Year: South El Monte 35-6

All-Time: South El Monte 16-0

Mt. View’s hopes died a little bit last week with a tough loss to El Monte. But the Vikings have new motivation this week as they try to beat South El Monte for the first time ever. Take away a couple of turnovers last week and the Vikes beat the Eagles.

South El Monte has been vulnerable defensively. It will be a tough task to stop the Vikes running game. The Eagles have some weapons in Billy Valencia and Anthony Jimenez but View has more.

Vikes make history.

Olympic

Valley Christian (4-3) at Maranatha (5-2)

Maranatha got its Olympic test right away in a seven point loss to Whittier Christian. The Minutemen were in it until the bitter end. Valley Christian won its league opener over LA Baptist.

Maranatha’s offense has been explosive. Andrew Elfers and Josh Jones have been connecting on a regular basis. Valley can score as well but can the Crusaders make enough stops?

Rio Hondo

La Canada (3-3) at Temple City (2-4)

Last Year: 10-15-09: Temple City 40-20, 11-13-09: La Canada 15-14 – 3 OT

One game into Rio Hondo League play and the Rams are in the playoff picture. Josh Simangunsong and Mikal Quintanilla have been making the offense go.

La Canada has had some players down with injuries including quarterback Scott Gray. But Gray returned last week to throw for 160 yards in a win over South Pasadena. He also had help from running backs Kevin Stoner and Daleep Sandhu.

Both teams need a win to keep on track for a playoff berth. La Canada wins a nail biter.

San Marino (2-4) at Monrovia (4-2)

Last Year: Monrovia 14-12

San Marino has hit the skids after starting the season 2-0. A loss here could completely knock the Titans out of the playoff picture.

Monrovia is hitting its stride. Everybody is healthy and all systems are go. We know about Nick Bueno, Derrick Johnson, Luke Williams and Anthony Craft. But keep an eye on Christian Blanco. He’s a warrior on both sides.

Valle Vista

Nogales (1-5) at Wilson 3-3)

Two Valle Vista league losses have cooled off Wilson’s hot start. The loss to Covina was understandable but last week’s home defeat to Northview is hard to swallow.

The Wildcats should get well here. Nogales is still a couple of years away. Don’t ask me who should play quarterback. I have no idea.

Northview (2-4) at San Dimas (4-3)

Last Year: San Dimas 49-24

San Dimas did what it had to last week in a win over Pomona. The Saints will do the same this week against Northview.

The Saints need to pass one more Valle Vista League test. That’s November 5 against Covina. If they win there, they’ll be fine, if not…ouch!  Anyway they’ll be fine here.
