Mike Mooney Resigns at San Marino

Mike Mooney stepped down at San Marino on Tuesday

(San Marino)- For personal reasons San Marino’s Mike Mooney has stepped down as head coach of the Titans football team and will be replaced by Principal Loren Kleinrock for the final four games of the season.

Mooney, who was in his first season back as HC after leading San Marino in 1997-1998, has also resigned his position as the school’s assistant principal.

After leading Temple City from 1999 through 2006, Mooney returned to San Marino as an assistant principal. In 2008 and 2009 he served on then head coach D.R. Moreland’s staff.

When Moreland resigned last spring to further his education, Mooney became the obvious candidate to fill the void.

During the transition period there were concerns about Mooney working in administration and leading the football program at the same time. Mooney later shared he would take the job because the school was in a bind for an HC, but had reservations about getting back into head coaching at the high school level.

Mooney, a graduate of Temple City and USC, leaves San Marino with a combined record of 14-13 over two and a half seasons. The Titans are currently 2-4 and have lost four straight after back to back victories to start the campaign.

San Marino is stating the departure was only for personal reasons and that they are going forward.

Mooney could not be reached for comment.
