Mid-Valley Division Game Night: Week Nine

Tim Peterson

Friday November 5

Almont

San Gabriel (3-5) at Alhambra (4-4) at Moor Field

Last Year: San Gabriel 52-14

It’s a must win for both teams. San Gabriel is coming off of a two point loss to Bell Gardens while the Moors were falling to Montebello. San Gabriel is down to its third string quarterback after injuries to Andy Guerrero and Erik Alvarez. But Arthur Brown did a decent job behind center in the Wildcat.

The Moors have been struggling to score points as well. Last week they were held to just a touchdown. Their defense will have to step up.

Montebello (3-5) at Schurr (5-3)

Last Year: Schurr 34-12

Montebello has surprised a few people. I don’t think anybody saw the Oilers in second place at this late date. Beating Schurr however is another story.

The Spartans have really seemed to catch fire. They have their eyes set firmly on another Almont Crown.

Mission Valley League

Arroyo (7-1) at El Monte (4-4)

Last Year: Arroyo 45-0

All-Time: Arroyo 36-6

It’s the biggest game of the year for the Lions. They’re off to a 3-0 start in the MVL and a win here would put them in the driver’s seat for the league title. But it’s worth noting that El Monte had to struggle to get two of its three wins. The Lions were down to both Mt. View and Gabrielino before rallying for victories.

Arroyo has dismissed everybody so far. An El Monte victory is a little too much to ask. They have a better shot next week against Rosemead. Steven Rivera and the Knights have too much.

Gabrielino (3-5) at Mt. View (4-4)

Last Year: Gabrielino 12-7

All-Time: Gabrielino 10-1

It’s already been a successful season for the Mt. View. A first ever win over South El Monte put the Vikes in the history books. Gabrielino is still searching for its first league win.

Mt. View’s running game will eventually wear down the Eagles, who don’t have a lot of depth. Jossymar Ulloa should have a big night.

South El Monte (1-7) at Rosemead (5-3)

Last Year: Rosemead 37-14

All-Time: Rosemead 10-6

South El Monte is making plans for next year. It’s been a tough year all around for Coach Ray Hernandez and the Eagles. South has allowed over 40 points or more in five of its seven losses. Make that six of eight.

Can Matt Fregoso match last week’s 360 plus yard game? Rosemead rolls.

Olympic

Village Christian (5-3) at Whittier Christian (7-1) at Whittier College

Last Year: Whittier Christian 41-35

Amjed Abour-hosn is a solid back. What makes him even more dangerous is his ability to catch passes out of the backfield. If he gets going he could make it tough on the Whittier Christian defense.

The Heralds offense has been clicking. Stephen Anderson continually makes big plays. Cameron Stanley (46 receptions, 722 yards, 8 touchdowns) doesn’t get enough ink. Village can score but Whittier scores more. WC remains undefeated in the Olympic.

Rio Hondo

San Marino (2-6) at La Canada (4-4)

Last Year: La Canada 14-10

Things have completely melted down at San Marino. The Titans were officially eliminated from the playoff picture last week in a bad loss to South Pas. La Canada meanwhile is still in the Rio Hondo hunt for second.

This one could get out of hand. La Canada runs away in the second half.

Monrovia (6-2) at South Pasadena (5-3)

Last Year: Monrovia 35-7

South Pasadena has had a credible year. They’ve won five games in a season in which some thought three would be a stretch. But don’t be thinking upset here.

Monrovia has rolled over everybody in the Rio and the Cats will again here. The real question is can the Tigers score on M-Town. Nobody has yet. South Pasadena should get in at least once.

Valle Vista

Covina (8-1) at San Dimas (5-3)

Last Year: San Dimas 35-0

The game of the week is in the Valle Vista. A win for the Saints keeps them alive for not only a playoff berth but a league title as well. A loss could knock them out completely depending on how things play out.

Covina won last week but it wasn’t easy in a seven point victory over Pomona. So far this year the Colts have risen to the occasion in big games. The opening night win over West Covina and the physical victory over Baldwin Park two weeks ago were impressive.

It’s starting to look like Covina’s year.

Wilson (4-4) at Pomona (3-5)

A once promising season has turned disappointing for Wilson with three losses in the last four games. There is still a lot of buzz around the two quarterback system that Wilson employs.

Even if the Wildcats win their last two they would be hard pressed to make the post season. That being said they should beat Pomona. The Red Devils have lost five straight after starting 3-0.

Question of the night for Wilson? Who gets more reps? Brandon Schrieman or Josh Morales?
