Missed Chances Hurt Apaches

(El Monte) – In the second game of the Arroyo Lady Knights Tournament, Arcadia played strongly only to come up short against Sonora 72-60 in a high scoring affair.

At the end of the night the Apaches will be thinking about the five missed opportunities it had in the second and third quarters of being able to cut six point leads and momentum.

Joy Kang scored 19 points to lead Arcadia in scoring with Juliana Okamoto and Melody Chang providing 15 points each.

The Apaches had gone down by as many as 13 early in the second quarter only to go on a 11-3 run midway through the stanza to cut the lead to five. Unfortunately for Arcadia, it failed to capitalize on Jasmine Hills foul trouble in the period to get any closer.

Chang ended the second half with seven points to help the Apache comeback.

The end of the third quarter would be Arcadia’s complete undoing having the Raiders go on an 8-0 run to end the quarter and have its highest lead of 16 points to start the final quarter.

An 8-3 run to begin the fourth quarter allowed the Apaches to get within 11 points with six minutes remaining in the game.

Melody Cazarin hit a layup to help Arcadia mount a small comeback midway through the final quarter to make the score 60-49 in favor of Sonora.

Hills became too much to handle for the Apaches with nine of her game-high 24 points coming in the fourth quarter when the Raiders needed her to come through.

With less than a minute remaining in the game Arcadia finished with a 5-1 run to cut the lead to 12 points.

Arcadia will face Monrovia in the third-place game of the tournament.
