(El Monte) –  The anticipated match-up of former Bishop Amat guard Gina Henderson versus the Lancers failed to live up to the hype with Bishop Amat dismantling Monrovia 57-26 in the semi-finals of the Arroyo Lady Knights Tournament.

The Lancers used a combination of tenacious defense and clutch shooting early to put the game away in the first half.

Although Henderson led all scorers with 15 points, she was held scoreless in the third quarter with the Lady Cats sputtering to only three points.

Viani Austin continues to impress with a team high 14 points and Leeah Powell’s physical inside presence added 13 points for Bishop Amat.

Early on it appeared the game lived up to its marquee match with both teams coming out playing defense. Monrovia managed to hold the Lancers to no field goals in the first three minutes of the game.

Andrea Villanueva’s three-pointer at the end of first quarter gave Bishop Amat a nine point lead.

The Lady Cats came out quickly to cut the lead to five points early in the second quarter. It would be the closest Monrovia could get the remainder of the night with the Lancers going on a 10-0 run to end the half.

The undoing for the Lady Cats came in the third quarter with the team making too many turnovers and only hitting one of 10 shots.

Bishop Amat went on a 16-0 that spanned the third and fourth quarters to completely put the game away.

The Lancers will face Sonora for the second straight year in the finals of the tournament. Bishop Amat has won the last three finals.
