After stepping off fire trucks with a police escort, the players came into the park to the theme of Rocky and went out to Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing.”

In between Monrovia Principal Darvin Jackson played Master of Ceremonies of the event as he introduced several speakers including Mayor Mary Ann Lutz. The biggest cheers from an estimated crowd of 1000 were for Monrovia Coach Ryan Maddox.

Every player on the roster was introduced as walked on to the stage. The seniors were announced last and stood on the top row with Jay Henderson and Nick Bueno drawing huge applause.

Maddox thanked the fans for all their support and praised the kids for all their hard work. At one point he referenced the crowd and the setting and said “This right here is what makes Monrovia one of the greatest cities in the United States.”

Maddox took the team one step further in each of his first three seasons ultimately culminating in a CIF title in 2010. In 2008 Monrovia lost to Rosemead in the Semi Finals and fell to San Dimas in a rain storm in “09. Last month Monrovia left no doubt with a 38-8 rout of Whittier Christian in the Final for the school’s first ever CIF crown.

Jackson may have summed up Maddox’ resolve best when talking about the final game which was supposed to be played at Monrovia only to be changed by CIF to Arcadia High School.

“Coach Maddox told me the week before the game ‘Darvin, I don’t care if we play in a parking lot, we’re going to bring this championship home to Monrovia,’ Jackson said.

With the first one out of the way there could be a several more to follow.
