Mt. View Stunned in First Round

By George Hernandez

(El Monte) – Mountain View, the two time defending CIF soccer champions, were shocked by Oaks Christian 1-0 Friday afternoon in the first round of the Division 5 playoffs.

Early in the game Justin Phillips hit a free kick from 45-yards out without the ball being touched to put Oaks Christian up. It turned out to be the only goal of the game.

View dominated the pace and controlled the field most of the game, but couldn’t get the ball in the net.

Oaks Christian goalie Christian Campat, had the save of the day when he fell on one shot and blocked it again on the Vikings second attempt. Campat finished the contest with 9 saves.

“We scored early and it changed the whole game. Mt. View is a tough team” said Lions coach Greg Dmitrowich.

“This is our best team in the past five years, but you live and learn. We haven’t lost this early in the playoffs in years but we’ll be back!” said Viking Coach Javier Aguiniga.

The Vikings finished 12-3-5, while Oaks Christian advances to the second round with an 11-7-2 record.
