Quick Scans: 6/22/09

Well that was a nice little war.

The Angels did well for themselves to split the season series with the Dodgers, but clearly the Dodgers are a superior team at this point…and that’s even without Manny Ramirez.

The Angels need more than Torii Hunter if they want to make any kind of run this year. Despite the hype around Mike Scioscia being an offensive genius and the Angels being so fundamentally superior, the Angels have generally been an average offensive team at best. Their pitching has always masked the offense’s deficiencies, but with John Lackey and Ervin Santana struggling, that will be tougher to do.

Maicer Izturis and Erick Aybar are punchless up the middle and Vlad Guerrero is hitting the decline phase of his career pretty rapidly. Luckily for the Angels, though, they reside in a division where they only need to be out 3 other teams, only one of which has won a postseason series since 1991 (1995 Seattle Mariners).

Did you see the U.S. qualify for the semis of the Confederation Cup???? Yeah, neither did I.

When are they going to start building domes around golf courses?

Pedro Martinez is throwing 85 MPH and begging for someone to give him a major league job. Sorry Pete…guys who throw 85 are a dime a dozen at AAA and teams don’t need to spend a few mil to bring them in. I’m sure somewhere, Tommy Lasorda feels vindicated and by somewhere I mean some Italian dive in Sherman Oaks.

Torosian mentions the plethora of Week Zero games going on this year and I actually think it’s a good trend. Having a break in the middle of the non-league schedule is a perfect opportunity to make adjustments and get guys healthy. It also helps student-athletes to put in some extra study time that they may have lost out on during the hectic beginning of the school year/football season.
