(La Canada) – After a week and half hiatus due to inclement weather, La Canada flexed its muscle to halt Monrovia’s four-game winning streak 5-0.
Stephanie Bathke turned a pitcher’s duel through four-plus innings into a blow out with a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Spartans got to Lady Cats pitcher Adrienne Guerra in the inning with one out. Catherine Horner and Megan Siepler each singled before Bathke’s drive went over the fence.
While the La Canada bats awakened, Lauren O’Leary was stellar going seven strong innings and striking out 10 Monrovia batters to register the Spartans first victory in over two weeks.
Monrovia squandered a golden opportunity in the top of the first inning with two outs. Samantha Saucedo drew a walk. Schae Simpson singled over the head of Anna Edwards and Nikki Guzman singled to left to load the bases. O’Leary was able to have Shelbi Zernickow pop out to Kelsey Drange to end the threat.
After a quiet two innings, the Spartans made noise.
Jessie Ogden singled and Edwards followed with a double down the line in right. Kelsey Drange loaded the bases with a fielder’s choice. Catherine Horner sacrificed Ogden with a deep-fly to center to open the scoring.
The following inning Kelsey’s older sister Shirley Drange hit a homer to right-center to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead.
After the first inning the Lady Cats never got past first base as O’Leary stymied Monrovia batters the remainder of the game.
Siepler ended the night going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
