Heralds Sneak Past Lancers

By Josh Lowden

(La Habra) – Whittier Christian’s Maddie Perez made plays all over the field, including batting in the game-winning run, to lead the Lady Heralds to a 1-0 victory over the visiting La Serna.

“She is the most focused player on this field,” said Head coach Dale Van Duyn of Perez. “She’s doing a good job running the infield.”

The run came in the first inning.

Lancers pitcher Jackie Valdez found early trouble.  In the bottom of the first, Reanna Lopez hit a triple to center field. Perez connected on a pitch after a long battle with Valdez, recording a RBI double.

La Serna responded with four hits in the second inning, but were unable to convert any runs.

Whittier Christian had the opportunity to score more runs in the fifth inning. With two outs, the Heralds had Lopez on third and Richelle Coberly on first with Perez up to bat. The Lancers handled a Perez’s grounder and tagged Coberly out at second to end the threat.

For the Heralds, Pitcher Bekah Kikuchi finished with two strikeouts and only seven hits against her.

“She pitched an incredible game against good hitters,” said Van Duyn. “Best game I’ve seen her throw all season.”

The Lancers never advanced a runner past second.

It was the Lancers first game in ten days.

“Our hitting was off today,” said La Serna coach Ginger Larsin. “With such a long layoff, it affected us just little bit.”

The Lancers will be busy the upcoming days, playing 7 games in four days. La Serna will be a featured team in the Springfest Tournament hosted by Diamond Bar on April 1st and 2nd.
