Huskies Blank Claremont

By Corey Kwok

(South Hills) – Sophomore pitcher Adrian De Horta went the distance, and allowed just two hits to lead South Hills to a 6-0 shutout over Claremont Wednesday in Sierra League play.

De Horta never allowed a runner past second base inducing nine fly outs and eight ground balls.

The Huskies’ victory also marked a big milestone for 13th year head coach Kevin Smith, who picked up his 400th coaching win at the helm of a baseball program that began with a stint at Baldwin Park.

South Hills jumped on Claremont starter Ken Chapman right from the get go as Danny Sheehan led off with a base hit to center before Dom Martinez pulled one to right for a single. C.J Saylor then drilled a double to deep left center to deliver Sheehan before Martinez scored on a passed ball. Saylor in turn was driven in on a groundout to shortstop by Ty France to make it 3-0 Huskies after one.

Chapman would settle down and retire 10 of the next 13 batters he faced up to the fourth inning with two outs, when walks and errors then unraveled the Wolfpack.

Ryan Peterson walked with one out and Jonathan Ayala did likewise after the second out before Sheehan’s hit to the third base side was overthrown for a two base error, plating Peterson. Martinez followed with a hopper to second that was deflected into the outfield where the ensuing throw towards home also went off the mark, allowing both Ayala and Sheehan to score and extend the South Hills lead to the eventual final, 6-0.

The lone Wolfpack batters to register hits were Manny Argomaniz (infield single) in the first and Auston Ingram (drive to right center) in the sixth.

Both teams hit the road for the next Sierra League bout Thursday as South Hills travels across town to face longtime nemesis Charter Oak while Claremont takes a short trip west to take on Damien. Both games start 3:15 pm.
