(Sun Valley, Ca) – La Canada swept Village Christian in a double-header to come out of the Spring Break with the same momentum in which they entered the break.
Lauren O’Leary continued her incredible run for the Spartans shutting out the Crusaders for 12-straight innings in gaining two wins during her stellar performance. O’Leary’s shut-out streak has reached 32 innings.
GAME 1 – LA CANADA 1 VILLAGE CHRISTIAN 0 (8 INNINGS)
Megan Siepler’s clutch ground rule double in the top of the eighth inning brought in Jessie Ogden from second base to break the zero-zero tie.
O’ Leary and Village Christian pitcher Emily Seidel each combined for 24 strike outs.
The Crusaders only opportunity for scoring came in the bottom of the first with two outs. Maddie Velasquez blooped a single to center. Velasquez advanced to second on a stolen base. Seidel flew to deep centerfield to end the inning.
No Village Christian runner advanced past second after the first inning.
The Spartans squanders its own chances in the fourth inning when Stephanie Bathke singled and advanced on a throwing error to second. Bathke found her way to third only to be stranded as Seidel struck out the next two hitters.
After La Canada took the lead O’Leary struck out the side in the Crusader bottom half of the eighth for the win.
GAME 2 – LA CANADA 4 VILLAGE CHRISTIAN 1
The Spartans wasted no time jumping on Katie Lucas in the second inning as the Drange sisters struck. Shirley singled to lead off the inning. After Annie Monroe struck out, Kelsey singled to center to score Shirley to give La Canada a 1-0 lead.
Village Christian struggled through the first-four innings as O’Leary stymied the offense not allowing a run to reach past second.
After a quiet first game, Anna Edwards drove in two runs in the top of the fourth inning plating Annie Monroe and Kelsey Drange. Monroe and Kelsey were beneficiaries of a walk and fielder’s choice. A pass ball got each of them in scoring position.
Freshman pitcher Alyssa Stolmack encountered early trouble when replacing O’Leary as Lucas singled and advanced to second on Sam Pyros grounder. Page Phillips singled in Lucas for the only Village Christian run.
La Canada added an insurance run in its top half of the seventh on Siepler’s triple. Catherine Horner easily made her way around the bases from first to score.
NOTES: STRIKE OUT CANCER
Circle your calendars, put it in ink. April 15th is the second annual La Canada Spartans Strike out Cancer game.
This season it is appropriate that the game pits La Canada’s Lauren O’Leary against San Marino’s Michelle Floyd. The game is scheduled for a 7pm night game.
There will be an opportunity to donate during the game.
The Spartans will be wearing pink and white and the Titans will wear the reverse colors.
