Good Morning!
Are you familiar with the phrase; “Oh, I”ve always been…”?
I’ve supplemented my income pretty good over the last few years, mastering this. You know you’ve hit the right note with it when someone curses you publicly…joy…
It really does bail you out of a lot of problems in sports…
“Oh, I’ve always been a Miami Heat fan…”
“Oh, I’ve always been a Dallas Mavericks fan…”
“Oh, I’ve always been a …(fill in the blank)…”
Sports has changed so much over the years, there used to be teams you’d root for no matter what. Teams, good, bad, indifferent, their fans would root for them.
Loyalty now seems to extend only as long as the local star stays in the hometown uniform. I’ve met very few Chicago Bulls fans, but I’ve met a million Michael Jordan fans…
This is the nice thing about local football…People stick with their schools no matter what. Maybe it’s because you can’t change where you went to school and the alma mater always has a hold on you.
During the course of covering football if we slight Mountain View we are going to get emails saying we slighted Mountain View…If we slight Gabrielino, we are going to get emails saying we slighted the Tongva Nation.
While I may not necessarily appreciate being referenced as a joke or idiot, I do love the passion. It’s consistent, it can be counted on, it is something you know is going to happen.
You are never going to hear a Rosemead guy say; “Oh, I’ve always been a Monrovia fan…”
You are never going to hear a Temple City guy say; “Oh, I’ve always been an Arroyo fan.”
You might hear me say it, because it is fun to frustrate people, but not the die-hards. You gotta love the die-hards.
You love the way they keep on banging away for their teams. Fifty players out becomes 75 players out. A 2-8 team is building to something bigger. An 0-10 team got shafted by a bad coach or a bad administration.
“You’ll see, we’ll be back and we’ll beat the BLANK out of Blank!”
You gotta love the die-hard when their best player transfers out to a private school….Instead of slipping on a Bishop Amat, Charter Oak, or St. Paul jersey…They call down curses on the boy, his father, and his future off-spring.
Is this right? Probably not…but it’s consistent and if there is anything sports is lacking these days it is consistency.
This is why prep trumps pro…You know, I’ve always been a fan of the die-hards…
