Steven Rivera ready to fire in Las Vegas

(Las Vegas) – Arroyo made its now annual trek to Las Vegas Saturday to compete in the Bobby Hauck Passing Tournament at UNLV. The Knights lost their first two games, rebounded to win the next one before losing the finale to go 1-3 and take 11th place.

Hunter Duran was Rivera's favorite target

“We always seem to lose our first game here,” Arroyo Coach Jim Singiser said following the opener. “It’s a good tournament and it gives us a chance to compete.”

The tournament consisted of 20 teams but only three from California with Franklin and another California team joining Arroyo. The competition started at 2:00 pm with the temperature hitting nearly 100 degrees.

Steven Rivera, the four year starter at quarterback, led Arroyo. Rivera also was instrumental on defense picking off a couple of passes. Two of the three losses for the Knights were in overtime. The OT losses are worth one point in the overall standing as opposed to zero in regulation improving Arroyo’s position.

Rivera was effective in finding several receivers with Hunter Duran and Andre Kerkhoff getting a bulk of the catches.

“We really started competing after the first game. I think there was something like six overtime games in our bracket,” Singiser said. “We still have a lot of work to do but that is why we have the rest of June, July and August. I found some kids that wanted to compete and some that didn’t.”

Arroyo was playing without WR/CB Brandon Jauregui who was participating in a baseball tournament.

“He’s really something special. He will be a two way starter for us,” Singiser added.

There was another familiar face at the Tournament. Former Schurr Coach Elvin Dick was also there as the Head Coach for Rancho High in Las Vegas.

Dick led the Spartans to the CIF title in 2006 and then stepped down and moved to Las Vegas where he took on the same gig at Rancho.
