Colts in Cruise Control, 43-6

Covina's Vinny Venegas rushed for two touchdowns and had one receiving

(Covina) – Covina jumped out to a 30-0 halftime advantage and never looked back in a 43-6 rout of Walnut Friday night at Covina District Field.

Vinny Venegas and Gevontray Ainsworth combined for five touchdowns to lead the way. Venegas ran for two scores and caught one while Ainsworth scored on a 37 yard run and caught a 35 yard touchdown pass from Daniel Sifuentes.

“It’s a great option to have with those two guys. It was good to see them jump out and be explosive,” said Covina Coach Darryl Thomas. “Gevontray really ran hard and Vinny’s our dude. I was happy with our play.”

The only negative in an otherwise positive for the Colt faithful was that quarterback Billy Livingston left the game in the second quarter with a shoulder injury. Sifuentes replaced him and played the rest of the way. It could be either just a bruise or a separation depending on the evaluation.

“It’s all just speculation at this point. We’ll know more after he’s checked out tomorrow,” Thomas said.

Livingston completed six of 12 for 43 yards including a 24 yard TD strike to Venegas in the first quarter before the injury. Venegas also capped a 15 play, 80 yard march with a seven yard run on the Colts first possession as Covina led 14-0 after one.

In the second Ainsworth got loose for a 37 yard run and also hauled in the scoring pass from Sifuentes. In between Nick Hynes blocked a Walnut punt out of the end zone for a safety and it was all but over at the break wth Covina up 30-0.

In the second half Walnut finally managed to get on the board with two field goals. Covina picked up right where it left off with two quick strikes. Venegas broke a couple of tackles and then broke off an 82 yard touchdown run early in the third quarter. In the fourth Sifuentes connected with Justin Mason on a 58 yard scoring strike down the far sideline.

Ainsworth had 18 carries for 116 yards and a touchdown to go along with his 35 yard TD reception. Venegas carried the ball nine times for 117 yards and two touchdowns.

Next week Covina (3-1) opens league play at Pomona while Walnut (0-4) hosts Los Altos in its league opener.
