Lancers Skewer Eagles’ Streak

By Big Tony Solorzano

(Bell Gardens) – Two rushing touchdowns from Jorge Remigio lead Bell Gardens to their second consecutive win as they knocked off previously undefeated South El Monte 24-14 to close out out the non-league portion of their schedule Friday night at Bell Gardens High.

It was evident that it would be a long night for the Eagles (4-1, 0-0) from the opening kickoff when George Garcia fumbled the opening kickoff on his own 9-yard line, giving an excellent scoring opportunity to the Lancers (2-3, 0-0), however, they could only manage a 27-yard field goal for the early 3-0 lead.

In the second, the Eagles capitalized on a fumble by Alex Orozco at mid-field and capped a nine-play drive with a 20-yard run by Dominic Munoz giving the Eagles the 6-3 lead. The Lancers would regain the lead at the midway point of the quarter on a two-yard run by Remigio, giving the Lacers a 10-6 lead However, the Eagles closed out the half with 26 seconds left in the half as quarterback Henry Mascorro connected with Javier Machuca for a seven-yard score Mascorro would connect to Jimmy Martinez for the two-point conversion, sending the Eagles into the half with a 14-10 lead.

The second half would be all Lancers as the Eagles were shut out for the remainder of the game. Remigio would score again late in the third for the go-ahead score with 1:15 left in the third. Early in the fourth, the Lancers scored again a minute in when Lancer quarterback Albert Lara connected with James Salazar on a 57-yard strike for the final score.

Alex Orozco led the Lancer ground attack with 19 carries for 63 yards while Remigio carried 13 times for 52 yards and two scores. Lara completed three of four passes for 96 yards, his longest the 57-yard score to Salazar. Munoz led the ground game for the Eagles, running 17 times for 82 yards and the score. Mascorro was 14 of 23 for 88 yards His leading target was Jesus Machuca who caught 5 passes for 48 yards.
