Muir Ruined by Ruiz

(Glendale)- Crescenta Valley’s Marro Lee rushed for 110 yards on 24 carries and scored  two touchdowns but it was Nick Ruiz’s late interception that secured the Falcons 27-20 victory over Muir on Friday night at Moyse Stadium.

The Mustangs, trailing 20-6, rallied with less than ten minutes remaining in fourth quarter. Quarterback Josh Muema-Washington connected with Tairen Owens to make the score 20-12. The extra-point attempt failed.

Muir was driving again deep into CV territory but Muema-Washington was picked off by Ruiz at the 12 and returned it all the way to the Mustangs 41.

Three big runs by Lee, inlcuding a 15-yarder to paydirt gave the Falcons a 27-12 advantage with 2:55 to play in the fourth quarter.

Undeterred Muir answered back with another big play from Muema-Washington. This time the quarterback went to Kevon Seymour for the touchdow and Owens reversed his field to score the deuce to make it 27-20.

The Falcons recovered the onside kick attempt, but Lee loses the ball while trying to run down the clock to give the Mustangs another chance.

With nine seconds left Ruiz intercepted a second Muema-Washington pass inside the CV 15 to secure the win.

Muir is now 0-2 in Pacific League play and Crescenta Valley is still unbeaten in league at 2-0.

The contest opened with Muema-Washington throwing his first of three touchdown passes on the night to Darrick Holmes for a 16-yard score. The point after was blocked.

The Falcons responded by going 80 yards on 12 plays before Lee scored on a 4-yard run. The drive was highlited by CV’s running of a fumblerooskie play with lineman Bobby Becerra for 13-yards.

The 7-6 lead improved to 10-6 when Pavle Atanackovic kicked a 49-yard field goal with 4:18 to play in the second quarter.

A 45-yard pass from quarterback Zac Wilkerson to Ruiz (4 catches 114 yards) gave CV a 17-6 lead. Atanackovic then added a 34-yard field goal at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
