Game Night Mid-Valley Division: Week Six

San Dimas' Bubba Alec Zenner and the Saints get Wilson this week

All game times are 7:00 PM unless otherwise indicated

Thursday October 13

Montview League

Duarte (4-0) at Azusa (2-3) at Citrus College

Last Year: Azusa 46-0

The Falcons have had a surprisingly fast start but it ends here. Duarte has cleaned up on the likes of Marshall, Blair and Bassett but Azusa is a whole different ballgame.

Quarterback Jake Martinez leads the Aztec attack and he can run it as well as throw it. Desmond Reed is a threat every time he touches the ball. The Aztecs lost their first three games to tough opponents but have gotten well with the beginning of Montview League play. Aztecs roll.

Azusa 42 Duarte 13

Rio Hondo League

Monrovia (2-3) at La Canada (1-4)

Last Year: Monrovia 34-10

The Spartans gave Arroyo all it wanted last week in a 23-21 loss. At one point they were up 21-7. Grant Owen and Kyle Herron can make things happen offensively.

The hard part is out of the way for Monrovia. Last week the Wildcats started on what should be a six game winning streak. Blake Heyworth looks like he is now the full time quarterback and along with weapons like De’Shawn Ramirez and Luke Williams Monrovia will score some points.

La Canada may hang around for a quarter or so but after that it will be all M-Town. Monrovia is off and running in the Rio.

Monrovia 35 La Canada 7

Almont League

Bell Gardens (2-3) at Schurr (0-5)

Last Year: Schurr 17-10

The Lancers are suddenly riding a two game winning streak having knocked off two teams with winning records in San Marino and South El Monte. For Schurr it’s a chance for a fresh start.

The Spartans haven’t just been beat; they’ve been pummeled into submission. They’ve been shut out three times and have only scored 20 points through the first five games. The schedule has been brutal but it’s a schedule that Schurr has dealt with in the past.

Schurr should be better now that league is here. But Bell Gardens is a tough way to begin the Almont. Lancers win a nail biter.

Bell Gardens 20 Schurr 17

Montebello (2-3) at San Gabriel (1-4)

Last Year: Montebello 27-26

The Oilers have lost their last three after winning their first two. The Matadors have also lost three straight and haven’t looked good doing it. San Dimas beat them 59-6 a couple of weeks ago. Both teams have a common opponent in Rosemead. Montebello beat the Panthers 20-9 while Mead beat SG 31-21.

Montebello has had trouble scoring at times while San Gabriel has had difficulty stopping people. The Oilers beat San Gabriel last year and they are improved this season. Mats lose fourth straight.

Montebello 24 San Gabriel 16

Mission Valley League

Arroyo (4-1) at Mt. View (3-2)

Last Year: Arroyo 42-24

All-Time: Arroyo 34-5

Mt. View is coming off a disappointing loss to Bell–Jeff while the Knights rallied to beat La Canada. The usual suspects, Steven Rivera, Hunter Duran and Peter Aholoka brought the Knights back.

I can’t imagine Arroyo making the same mistakes that it made last week against La Canada. I also can’t imagine the Viking secondary stopping Rivera, Duran and company.

Arroyo wins big.

Arroyo 38 Mt. View 6

Rosemead (3-2) at El Monte (3-2)

Last Year: Rosemead 42-29

All-Time: Rosemead 37-12

This is a huge game for both teams. Rosemead needs to keep pace with Arroyo and put themselves in a position for a possible league title or second place berth. The Lions want to show that they, and not Rosemead, are a viable contender for the crown.

Rosemead has established a running game with Matt Eddy. He has rushed for over 300 yards in the last two weeks. Expect the Panthers to continue to pound it against El Monte.

Brandon Martinez has done a terrific job leading the Lions and is a threat to pass or run the ball. The Lions have shut out their last two opponents.

Rosemead should do what it does best – run the ball and play defense. El Monte will need to stop the run and make some big plays offensively.

It could come down to a turnover in the fourth quarter. Rosemead gets it done.

Rosemead 17 El Monte 14

South El Monte (4-1) at Gabrielino (3-2)

Last Year: Gabrielino 28-13

South El Monte’s win streak was broken last week at Bell Gardens. The Southmen need a win over Gabrielino to get started off on the right foot in the MVL.

Henry Moscorro took over for the injured Fernando Ramirez at quarterback but the Eagles can score either way. They have scored 28 points or more in four of their five games.

Gabrielino’s three victories have come against lesser opponents. It will be tough for the Tongva Nation to keep up with South El Monte. SEM improves to 5-1.

South El Monte 30 Gabrielino 13

Olympic League

Village Christian (3-3) at Valley Christian (1-4)

Last Year: Village Christian 56-27

Village Christian couldn’t get it going last week in a loss to Rio Hondo Prep. The Crusaders would like nothing more than to kick off Olympic League with a win over Valley.

Valley has lost four out of five including a 63-14 defeat to St. Joseph last month. Village needs to establish the run with Amjed Aboul-hosn, grab the lead and control the clock. If that happens it could be a long night for Valley. Last week Village got the lead early but was unable to hold it.

Nobody should run away with this one. It might come down to a late field goal. Village Christian comes out victorious.

Village Christian 24 Valley Christian 21

Rio Hondo League

South Pasadena (3-2) at Temple City (0-5)

Last Year: South Pasadena 27-17

All-Time: Temple City 40-16

If somebody told you a month ago that after five games Temple City would be 0-5 and South Pas would be 3-2 you would have had them fitted for a straight jacket. But here we are and that’s exactly what it is.

A win for Temple City would make the non league schedule a lot less painful. The Rams however have a lot of things to work on to make that happen. The defense has been getting torched and offensively they have been inconsistent.

South Pas surprised Alhambra with a great defensive effort and now looks like a contender in the Rio Hondo.

TC will eventually get a win but it won’t be here. South Pasadena gets the W.

South Pasadena 21 Temple City 13

Valle Vista League

Wilson (0-5) at San Dimas (4-1) at Charter Oak

Last Year: San Dimas 49-9

Wilson might be able to get the passing attack going with Josh Morales and Keith Hawk and if J.R Nelson can balance it out by chewing up some yardage the Wildcats might be able to pull an up…nah! Who am I kidding?

San Dimas wins and wins big. The Saints have a devastating rushing attack that Wilson will have no answer for. It could be a long night for Wilson. Actually maybe not. There could be a running clock in the fourth quarter making it a short night after all.

San Dimas 41 Wilson 10
