Devil Made Me Do It: 10/13/2011

Tickets in hand and no where to go.

Lots of shaking heads as many can’t believe its two columns in a week.

Yesterday was the 25th Anniversary of the Angels-Boston Red Sox ALDS Game 5. That was the game that I learned what heartbreak really was. Not getting broke up with by the “girl out of my league”, but Gene Mauch and the Angels.

My mom (a huge Angels fan) and I went to all three games at Anaheim Stadium for that series. She had already told my dad as we left for the stadium that day that we would be camping out overnight for World Series tickets.

Putting the cart before the horse at the top of the ninth, I couldn’t believe that I was heading to a World Series game. Of course, that all changed thanks to Mauch’s questionable managerial moves in the ninth inning.

Needless to say, I did end up spending Sunday night in the back of the family VW Van and waiting in line the next day for World Series tickets. My dad added to my delinquency by calling La Salle high school and letting them know I came down with the flu.

Sadness struck two games later with World Series tickets in hand when the Bosox beat the Angels in Game 7.

When I first started dating my wife, she wore Boston Red Sox shirt to one of our dates. It nearly ruined the relationship until she swore never to wear again.

After moving to our new home in San Gabriel, my wife asked what happened to the Red Sox shirt she previously wore. The answer was simple, it was lost during the move. To this day she doesn’t have a clue that it became part of our fireplace during the first winter.

Hope she never finds out.
