Buccaneers Keep Hold of Suburban League Lead

By Tony Solorzano

(Bellflower) – Travis Mayberry and Ryan Hundley combined for over 201 yards and four touchdowns as Bellflower held onto the top spot in the Suburban League with a 28-27 overtime victory over Norwalk Friday night at Ron Yary Stadium.

For the second consecutive week, the Lancers (1-6, 1-2) took their opponent to overtime before falling, but unlike last week’s blocked two-point try, this week it was a missed point-after attempt by Ezequiel Zuniga that made the difference in the loss to the Buccaneers (5-2, 3-0).

After a scoreless first quarter, the Lancers opened up the scoring early in the quarter with Bobby Favela’s 18-yard touchdown pass to Jose Vasquez with 9:51 to go in the quarter. The Buccaneers answered on Newberry’s first of two touchdowns on a seven-yard rush midway through the quarter. But the Lancers regained the lead when quarterback Swain Williams’ pass attempt was tipped and pulled down by Eric Stewart at the Lancer 45-yard line, taking the ball back for a touchdown.

In the third, Gabriel Angulo increased the Lancer lead to 21-7 on a one-yard run with 8:39 left, but Hundley cut the lead five minutes later when he broke free for a 17-yard rushing score.

In the fourth, the Buccaneers found themselves stuck on their own 36-yard line on fourth-and-eight when the Buccaneers pulled off a fake punt. The ball was snapped to Jose Ochoa who peeled right and tossed to Devon Barnes who got to the Lancer 36. On the next play, Newberry carried the ball into the Lancer red zone on a 20-yard rush, and then punched it in from 15 yards out to tie the game 21-21, with 6:22 left in regulation.

The Buccaneers had a chance to win the game in regulation, getting the ball back with 34 seconds left in the fourth and managed to get to the Lancer 24 before time expired, sending the game to overtime.

The Lancers got the first score with Favela’s one-yard run, but Zuniga’s kick missed, giving the Buccaneers their shot. On their possession, Hundley punched in from two yards out, and Julio Portillo’s wobbly point after just cleared the crossbar to give the Bucs the win.

Hundley and Newberry led the Buccaneer offense, with Hundley carrying the ball 24 times for 169 yards and two touchdowns, while his cousin Newberry took the ball 21 times for 132 yards and two scores. Sophomore Rashaad Penny led the Lancers’ offense with 88 yards on 20 carries, while Favela completed five of eight passes for 99 yards and a touchdown.

Next week, the Buccaneers head to Artesia High while the Lancers get the Bye Week before returning in two weeks to take on Glenn at Excelsior High.
