San Dimas Domination, 34-6

Jake Payton ran for three touchdowns to lead the Saints

(Covina) – Jake Payton ran for three touchdowns and Devante Brown had over 100 yards rushing to lead San Dimas to a 34-6 rout of Northview Thursday night at Covina District Field.

The Saints had over 200 total yards on the ground running out to a 34-0 lead early in the third quarter. San Dimas Coach Bill Zernickow pulled nearly all of his starters in the third.

The defense set up the first score in the first quarter. Dillon Corona intercepted Northview quarterback Victor Garcia and returned it to the Viking 11. On the first play from scrimmage Shawn Kennedy hit tight end Cody McNeal for a touchdown.

On the next possession, Northview mounted a long time consuming drive that lasted nearly the rest of the first quarter. Behind the running of Javon Taylor, they marched 73 yards all the way down to the San Dimas seven. But the Saint defense stiffened and held on fourth down.

San Dimas scored on its next two series. Payton finished a 55 yard drive with a ten yard run. Later in the second, Kennedy circled out on a pattern after giving the ball to Andrew Espinoza and hauled in a15 yard touchdown pass. He then punctuated the score with a back flip and it was 21-0 at the half.

The Saints didn’t miss a beat in the third rattling off two quick touchdowns. A 54 yard run by Brown set up a 21 yard TD run by Payton.

On the next possession Corona returned a punt down to the Northview 19. Five plays later, Payton scored on a five yard dash.

“Our defense played excellent tonight,” said San Dimas Coach Bill Zernickow. “We were able to put a lot of pressure on them.”

Northview finally got on the board early in the fourth. Garcia found Daniel Valencia behind the San Dimas secondary for a 30 yard touchdown strike.

San Dimas had two touchdowns called back on consecutive plays in the second half including a long punt return by Corona.

Payton, only a sophomore, finished with 65 yards and three scores on eight carries. Brown had seven carries for 117 yards. San Dimas improved to 4-1 in the Valle Vista setting up a showdown for second place next week with Pomona. Northview fell to 2-3 in league and 2-7 overall.

“We’ve got to buckle up our chin straps next week. Pomona has the best talent in the league,” Zernickow said.
