Off The Cuff: August 7, 2009

Can someone explain to me what Michael Crabtree is thinking?

It seems completely out of the realm of reality that Crabtree will get what he is asking for just because he was “projected” to go higher than 10th overall in this years NFL Draft.

So who is to blame in all of this?

Believe it or not, some are stating that Al Davis is the problem.  It began when he “reached” on wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey at the seventh overall spot.

This has nothing to do with Davis and the fact he is getting a little older.  It has everything to do with those wonderful Mock Drafts.

Quite honestly, Crabtree was a reach for San Francisco.  Prior to the combine, he was injured with a foot problem and was unable to participate in Torosian’s favorite off-season event.

The fact that Crabtree is attempting to make more money based on what others slotted him to go is completely insane.

I had a good talk with a potential teammate of Michael’s  last night.  His stance and most veterans thoughts on how much rookies make coming into the league hasn’t changed.  They all believe the amount of money these kids hold-out for is laughable and a bit of a slap in the face.

Most veterans won’t make that type of money until after their first contract is expired and they prove to the owners what they are worth.

If I were Crabtree, I would take what was offered and quiet down.  One thing that is for certain is that veterans in this league don’t forget when a snot-nosed rookie slighted their team by holding out.

Crabtree needs to remember the past players that went in thinking they were next version of “the next big thing”.  Where are Maurice Clarett and Mike Williams to name a few that decided to go against the grain with the NFL Draft.

Of course, this is a bit different as Crabtree waited for the right time to get drafted, but how much did that game against Texas play in his head?  Don’t get me wrong Michael is good, but he hasn’t shown that his game will work in the NFL level.

Whoever is advising him needs a dose of reality.  Take what you get.  Crabtree will make more than Torosian, Scanlan, Peterson, Barker, Hernandez and I make in a year.
