Mid-Valley Division Defensive Assistant of the Year: Monrovia’s Craig Schuster

Schuster doing what coaches do: teach.

Welcome to Awards Season

Can you name the only defensive coordinator in Monrovia history to win back to back CIF titles?

Okay, that’s an easy one but what was more difficult was nailing down who this award should go to. There were some great defenses, some great adjustments, and some great play calls but in the end the Mid Valley Sports staff settled on Schuster.

The former Azusa HC, who made a one year stop at San Dimas in 2009, played a vital role in keepin the Wildcats defense working when the offense wasn’t at the start of the 2011 season.

The key moments for Schuster’s defense came in the playoffs when they halted a lightening strike Pomona team in round one, destroyed Whittier Christian on the road, and stopped the favored Covina Colts in the semifinals.

In the finals it was an adjustment the Monrovia defensive made at the half that turned a 14-14 game into a rout.

With the San Gabriel offensive line continually double-teaming Ellis McCarthy on the inside for the first two quarters, Schuster moved his defensive tackle to defensive end at the start of the second half. Pairing him up on the same side with George Frazier and making a double team nearly impossible or very expensive. As SG concerned itself with McCarthy and Frazier this unleashed Cade Schulz (3 sacks/9 tackles) and Brett Walsh (11 tackles).

The Matadors had no answer and the Wildcats got their second consecutive ring.

For that effort and result Schuster is the Mid Valley Sports “Defensive Assistant of the Year” in 2011.
