Gabrielino Tops South

(San Gabriel) – Tyler Shimamoto planted 12 of his game high 25 points in the third quarter for Gabrielino, who outscored South El Monte 23-12 that period before finishing off a 59-39 win Wednesday night in MVL action.

The third quarter also saw Bryan Phan, Stephen Franco, and Nathan Quach all bury treys off the bench for the host Tribe. Starting freshman wing Eli Peters scored in every quarter and ended up with 14 points for Gabrielino.

Peters, Shimamoto, and George Messropian all scored to open up an early 6-0 lead for Gabrielino, but the rest of the first quarter proved to be a slugfest and ended with a baseball score of 8-4 in Gabrielino’s favor.

‘South was without several players including lead scorer Jordan Villela (9.3 PPG) and got numerous second chance rebounds against GHS in the first half but answered with just four field goals, two free throws, and 10 points and trailed the Tribe 22-10 at the half. The Southmen were locked up on the perimeter and didn’t hit any threes until Chris Pinon (9 points) and Antonio Sandoval (7) each nailed one in the fourth. Richard Natividad led SEM with 14 points and accounted for 12 of those in the second half.

Gabrielino improved to 8-7 0verall and 3-0 in league while South El Monte fell to 2-11 and 0-3.
