Aguirre Arrives

Lee Aguirre has arrived at Brigham Young University and I have the picture to prove it. We’re looking forward to following the former South El Monte High and Fullerton JC star in his first year in Provo. Honestly I’ve never been a BYU fan. Suddenly I can’t wait for the Cougars first game.

Northview has lost Oscar Robles, Lionel Acosta, Andrew Rodriguez, Christian Vargas, Joseph Logsdon, Anthony Farmer, Kevin Jones the list goes on…to graduation. So what is Viking Coach Jim Arellanes predicting? A Valle Vista League title of course.

“A third straight league title, absolutely,” Arellanes said Tuesday night on the Mid Valley Sports Show. “Someone told me the other day we were the favorites to win the Valle Vista and I said good. That’s where we should be. We should be favored.”

Arellanes will be relying heavily on Kamaron Germany to lead the Vikes to the league crown. The senior running back will also be playing on the defensive side of the ball in the secondary. Junior Martin Arredondo is slated to replace Robles at quarterback and senior Randy Contreras is expected to anchor the lines.

“He’s been a beast so far this summer. In fact I’ve had to tell him to tone it down before he hurts someone,” Arellanes said of Contreras.

Life in Westwood

Honestly I’ve never been a UCLA fan. But with former Arcadia linebacker Todd Golper now wearing the powder and blue, suddenly I can’t wait for the Bruins first game.

View from the South

While Northview is counting the number of players that graduated in June, South Hills is counting the number of players coming back. Geoffrey Vaughns, Ify Umodu, and Miles Bevel among others are all back as Steve Bogan’s Huskies prepare to make a run at the Southeastern title. South Hills will be tested right out of the box with Ayala, La Habra and Tesoro in the first three weeks. The Huskies get Northview at Covina District Field in week four.

TC QB? Anybody got a Clue?

Trying to find out who the starting quarterback is going to be at Temple City is like trying to find weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East. We know he’s out there hiding somewhere but we just can’t find him or when he will be revealed. Someone even suggested that Morgan Hatch is petitioning for a fifth year of eligibility. Coach Anthony White may not decide until five minutes before the Mid Valley Classic kick off.

Another Acosta on the Scene

Another Acosta is looking to make an impact at South El Monte. Mark Acosta has the inside track to the starting quarterback position at South El Monte. First year Coach Ray Hernandez will need him to fill the big shoes of the graduated Jose Garay. South, like Northview has a lot of holes to fill. However Mark is not the brother of three sport star Manny Acosta who is heading to Cal State LA on a scholarhship this year to play baseball.

Zeroing In

Nogales at La Puente, Alhambra at Roosevelt, Cathedral at San Gabriel, San Dimas at Los Altos, Diamond Ranch at Muir, Norwalk at South El Monte and Arcadia at Monrovia are among the games to be played in zero week – Friday September 4. If you can’t wait that long La Puente is at Gabrielino Thursday September 3.

Football Rush Week is coming August 24-28.
