Gabrielino Works OT for MVL Title

(San Gabriel) – Tyler Shimamoto hit the game tying shot at the regulation buzzer and Gabrielino went on to beat Arroyo 59-58 in overtime Friday night to win the Mission Valley League title.

Shimamoto scored three more points in the overtime period as Gabrielino outscored the Knights 6-5 to grab the one point win. Elijah Peters also hit a big three in OT.  Shimamoto led the Eagles with 27 points.

Primitivo Gomez, who has been red hot the last two weeks, led all scorers with 31 points for Arroyo. Alex Arriaga had nine.

The Eagles went up 19-9 in the first quarter as they nailed five three pointers including two by Peters.

Arroyo bounced back to lead by as many as seven in the fourth quarter before Shimamoto and Gabrielino battled back to tie.

The Eagles stumbled only once in league play to win the MVL at 9-1. The Eagles were 14-10 overall. Arroyo took second at 7-3 and 14-12 on the year.
