Covina Finishes off St. Francis

Mike Peters broke ankles and hearts at St. Francis

(La Canada) – Covina racked up 21 points in the fourth quarter to close out St. Francis 50-41 Friday night and advance to the third round of the CIF Division 3A playoffs.

Mike Peters knocked down five consecutive free throws and scored nine points in the final quarter to ice it for the visting Colts. Peters had 11 on the night.

Colt center Edgardo Campos, buried a pair of big threes in the fourth quarter and Chris Sotelo hit a couple of baskets inside to keep St. Francis at bay. Covina led by one after three before outscoring the Golden Knights 21-13 in the final quarter.

The Colts nailed six three point shots overall as Nino Harrell hit four including two in the first quarter. All of Harrell’s points came from long distance as he scored 12 on the night.

“We have some guys that can shoot the ball pretty well,” said Covina Coach Will Bissman.

St. Francis led at the end of the first quarter 10-8 and played Covina even in the second quarter to carry an 18-16 lead into the break. Covina got a three ball from Harrell in the third and despite five points by St. Francis’ Tei Vanderford, the Colts emerged with a one point lead after three.

Covina opened the fourth with a 6-1 run and ran away with the victory.

“I thought we tried to play to the crowd a little too much early but then we settled down,” Bissman said.

The Colts had three players in double figures. Campos joined Harrell and Peters as he scored 13 to lead the scoring attack. Vanderford took scoring honors for the Golden Knights with 13 points and Zack Gardea tossed in 11. Noah Willerford hit a three point shot late and added seven.

Bissman attributed his team’s success to the competition in the Valle Vista.

“Absolutely playing in the Valle Vista helped us. Playing that tough schedule has really helped us get ready for the playoffs.”

Next up for Covina is St. John Bosco Tuesday night at home in the quarterfinals.
