(Alhambra) – The Lady Aztecs of Keppel, seeded #1 in Division 2-AA, and ranked 23rd in California by Maxpreps, hardly felt the faintest inkling of threat and powered past visiting Coachella Valley 86-16 at home in their new Aztec Arena to usher in the CIFSS 2-AA playoffs.
Keppel capitalized upon a tsunami of Coachella turnovers, and with 3:51 yet to play in the first quarter led 24-0. The Lady Aztecs ended that quarter up 37-6 and had yet to take their foot off the gas pedal with the lead skyrocketing to 65-10 at halftime before finally getting stopped by none other than the game’s last buzzer.
Alyson Lock amassed 22 points over 10-for-14 from the field, posted 12 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals all within the first three quarters to lead the Lady Aztecs.
Sandra Gao, active for only the first half, finished with 15 points (two “and-1” conversions) and 4 assists. Lesley Tan recorded 8 steals and Lauren Saiki dropped the most dimes (7 dishes), while the Lee duo (Samantha and Ashley) both hit three bombs from long distance to round off the Lady Aztec leaders.
Keppel’s call-ups from the lower levels, Krystin Nakamura and Kelli Kamida, each hit treys on their first shots off the bench in the fourth.
Keppel will hit the road for round two to take on a much more formidable opponent in Newbury Park from the tough Marmonte league.
