Another No-No for Acosta

By Corey Kwok

(San Gabriel) – Angel Acosta delivered a dominant complete game no hitter and received plenty of run support as Gabrielino small-balled its way to a seven run third inning before settling for an 8-0 shutout over South El Monte in a key MVL contest Wednesday.

Gabrielino batted around nearly unscathed as eight of its first nine reached safely and yielded five runs, featuring RBI singles from Vinnie Albelo, Joseph Lomeli, and Ethan Cantu, with help of two infield errors that paved the path for three of those runs.

Acosta, with two outs against on his second trip to bat in this third stanza, popped a stratosphere shot that went unplayed with help from brilliant sunlight and fell on the infield for a rare two RBI infield single and a 7-0 GHS lead.

Gabrielino added one more run in the fourth as Cantu knocked in Lorenzo Mena on a right-center drive.

South had runners on second and third with two outs in the first but hardly threatened thereafter as Acosta and Gabrielino’s playmakers retired the minimum three in five of the last six innings (four perfect innings).

GHS has built itself a two game lead in MVL play over South and Rosemead with seven more bouts to go.
