(El Monte)- Mountain View’s Jose “Nacho” Zamora scored a touchdown in the third quarter, and Mt. View held on to beat Alhambra 10-6 in the 2012 season opener Friday night.
The Vikings and Moors both came out strong on defense but View was able to put a field goal on the board late in the first quarter, off Chris Gonzalez’ foot.
After Zamora fumbled in the second quarter, he came back with a vengeance pounding the ball for the Vikings. On a second and goal late in the second quarter “Nacho” found the end zone to put the Vikes up 10-0.
The Moors got on the board when a questionable pass interference was called on Mountain View. Quarterback Armando Amaya took advantage and scored on a quarterback sneak to make it 10-6 after Diego Estrada blocked the extra point.
The Viking defense was led by Jonathan Correa, Joshua Martinez, William Castillo and Gonzalez. Gonzalez had two picks on the night and Castillo added one as well. Yoary Martinez had a sack for the Vikes.
Offensively, Zamora had 8-carries for 38-yards and a touchdown and Chris Cervantes had 15-carries for 65-yards. Quarterback Xavier Yanez went 3 of 4 for 27-yards. Yasban “Beast” Bazan and J. Martinez also chipped in.
The Moors, which only had 146-total yards, was led by Amaya who went 14 of 26 for 97-yards and 3-interceptions and Jeremy Makesca who got a lot of touches.
“Our first victory was having our whole team eligible,” said Viking Coach Victor Ambruso. “We knew we were underdogs, but knew our defense could play with them.”
