(Montebello) – Schurr capitalized on a pair of turnovers to win its season opener over Burroughs, 20-7, Friday night.
Quarterback Aaron Canto was key throwing for 209 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Nicholas Castillo did the dirty work with 28 carries and 119 yards. Burroughs’ Dalton Williams was the highlight for the Indians running for 103 yards but fumbled twice in the first half.
Burroughs almost took an early lead when Williams keyed a drive that reached inside the Spartan 10 before fumbling. Schurr didn’t do much with the turnover as Canto was picked off himself. Continuing the trend of the night, Williams once again fumbled on the first play of the Burroughs ensuing possession.
The Spartans finally took advantage as Canto found Carlos Avredondo on a 16-yard pass for a 6-0 lead with a minute left in the first quarter.
The lead wouldn’t last as Burrough scored two minutes into the second quarter. After a 60 yard run by Yanez, Williams flew over the line diving for the two-yard touchdown and the 7-6 lead. The Indians had a chance to extend their lead after Canto was intercepted again, but ran out of time.
The start of the second half was unique, to say the least. Straight off the kick-off, Burroughs fumbled and Schurr recovered at the 20 yard line. Yanez found an open Mark Aguila to regain the lead, 14-7, after a 2 point conversion.
Following the kick-off, Schurr’s Christian Madrid and Burroughs’ Michael Solano were both ejected. The lost of Solano and the disruption itself rattled the Indians as they went four and out only to let the Spartans score on their next possession. Castillo finished the 55-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown run, to close out the Spartan scoring, 20-7.
