(Montebello)- In a game dominated by the quarterbacks, it was El Rancho and Joey Sanchez that outdueled Montebello of Matt Saenze, 57-48 on Friday night at Heaman Field.
On an evening where the temperature was 90 degress at kick off, Saenz and Sanchez accounted for 852 yards of offense between them.
Montebello’s Saenz completed 35 of 49 passes for 360 yards and two touchdowns. Scoring strikes were completed to senior wide uut Gilbert Herrera, and sophomore tight end Michael Juarez. Additionally, Saenz ran for 48 yards on 11 carries, scoring on a pair of one yard plunges. The remainder of Montebello’s scoring was provided by senior running back Marcus Portillo, who scored on runs of 15, 2, and 4 yards.
This performance could be overshadowed by very few teams. Unfortunately for the Oilers, the Dons had a few noteworthy occurrences of their own.
The very talented Dons tandem of quarterback Joey Sanchez and running back Johnny Garcia shined a little bit brighter. Sanchez completed 10 of 16 pass attempts for 101 yards and a 3 yard touchdown pass to Garcia.
The majority of the damage that was inflicted by Sanchez was done with his feet. Sanchez finished the evening with 16 carries for 343 yards, including touchdown runs of 1, 21, 53, and 60 yards. Garcia added 190 yards on 12 carries, and contributed scoring scampers of 7 and 67 yards.
The game was marred by several penalties, including two personal fouls and one unsportsmanlike conduct call.
The victory improved El Rancho’s record to 3-1, while Montebello drops to 2-2.
