Week 6 Round-Ups: Northwest Division

La Salle 65, Verbum Dei 7

For the fourth time this season, the Lancers (6-0, 1-0) held an opponent to a touchdown or less as they knocked off the Eagles (1-5, 0-3) to open play in the Del Rey league Friday night at Verbum Dei.

Quarterback Austin Wallis threw four first-half touchdowns and threw for 170 yards as the Lancers took a commanding 41-7 lead at halftime.The Lancers scored on six of their seven first-half possessions, while the Lancer defense stymied the Eagle ground game, registering a total loss of 35 yards on the ground and 65 yards total offense.

The Lancers travel to San Pedro’s Daniels Field to face off against Mary Star of the Sea while Verbum Dei has an open date and will play Cantwell-Sacred Heart on October 19.

OLYMPIC

Maranatha 40, Heritage Christian 7

The Minutemen (1-5, 1-0) ended a five-game skid as they opened Olympic League play by handing the Warriors (4-3, 0-1) their third loss in the last four games Friday night at Maranatha.

The Minutemen got 100+ yard performances from running back Omar Younger (24 carries, 147 yards one touchdown) and receiver Reid Pike (four catches, 100 yards, two touchdowns). The Minutemen defense stymied the Warrior offense, picking off quarterback Tyler Noe three times, including one by Justin Coats returned for a touchdown. Logan McClain, who played his first game since transferring from Blair, recovered a fumble for the Minutemen.

Maranatha will host Lancaster’s Desert Christian next week while Heritage Christian will play host to Whittier Christian.

PIONEER

North Torrance 39, Centennial 28

The Saxons (5-1, 1-0) nearly lost a 27-point lead as they held to stop the Apaches (1-5, 0-1) and push their losing streak to four games, Friday night at North Torrance High.

After North’s Austin Borin scored early in the second, the Saxons held a seemingly insurmountable 33-6 lead, but the Apaches started to come back as Shavonney Drew scored on a four-yard run late in the second quarter to cut the lead at halftime to 33-14, then on the opening kickoff of the second half, Harold Johnson ran the kickoff 67 yards for another Apaches score. The Apaches closed the score to 33-28 before surrendering a fumble that ended up in a Saxon score late in the game.

Late in the third quarter, an interception of Saxon quarterback Jorge Hernandez resulted in receivers Micahel Jurado and Junio “Mique” Juarez being injured. Although Jurado was able to walk off the field, Jurado suffered a neck injury that necessitated his being transported to a local hospital. There was no word on his current condition.

Torrance 32, South Torrance 25

Running back Johnathon Heard rushed for a career-high 356 yards and three touchdowns as the Tartars (3-3, 1-0) knocked off the Spartans (3-3, 0-1) for the first time in five years Friday night at South Torrance.

Heard took over the rushing duties after an injury to Bobby Wilson moved him up the depth chart. Heard scored twice in the first half on rushes of 80 and 74 yards, but the Tartars trailed 17-12 at halftime. The Tartars would tie the game 25-25 on two touchdowns by Sam Hudson in the fourth quarter.

Heard would break the tie and score the game-winning touchdown with 1:35 left in the game as he ran a 40-yard pitch to the Spartans’ end zone. Tartans lineman Leo Fuimaono would seal the victory as he sacked Spartans quarterback Kyle Nesbit on a fourth-and-24 play on the Tartars’ 31-yard line.
