La Serna 62, Pioneer 0
The Lancers (5-1, 1-0) opened Del Rio league play by shutting out the Titans (1-5, 0-1) and handing them their fifth straight defeat Friday night at Pioneer High’s Titan Stadium.
After taking a 28-0 halftime lead, the Lancers scored five touchdown in the third quarter, forcing a running clock in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Frankie Palmer passed for 124 yards and scored three touchdowns, two passing and a rushing touchdown of his own,
The Lancer defense contributed to the onslaught with two fumble recoveries in the end zone by Bryce Oliver and Austin Johnson, as well as a turnover and interception that turned into scores one play later.
Santa Fe 15, Whittier 0
The Chiefs (3-3, 1-0) ended a two-game losing streak that also saw their largest scoring out put as they shut out the Cardinals (3-3, 0-1) to open Del Rio league play Friday night at Cal High’s Whittier District Field.
The Chiefs scored in the first and second quarters on touchdowns by Gabriel Cisneros. Eddie Mendez also added a 32-yard field goal midway through the third quarter. The Cardinals were unable to penetrate the Chiefs’ red zone and had a potential 96-yard kickoff return called back for a holding call.
The Cardinals had one more chance to score but a fumble recovery on the Cardinal 42 by the Chiefs’ Mason Segura ended the threat and sealed the shut out for the Chiefs.
HACIENDA
Rowland 28, Los Altos 13
The Raiders (5-2, 2-1) earned their second straight win in the Hacienda League with a win over the Conquerors (4-3, 1-2) Friday night at Rowland High.
Defensive back Diego Arias was responsible for half the Raiders’ scores, converting fumbles in the first and second quarters for scores, including a 97-yard fumble recovery in the second quarter that put the Raiders up 14-7. Quarterback George Campos threw two touchdowns in the second half to put the Raiders up 28-7.
The Conquerors would score one more time as Cristian Hacegaba hit Christian Palacios with a 50-yard strike to end the scoring 28-13.
West Covina 35, Walnut 7
The Bulldogs (3-4, 2-1) bounced back from their upset loss to Los Altos by handing the Mustangs (1-5, 0-2) their fifth straight loss Friday night at Walnut High.
The Bulldogs pulled out to a 14-0 lead on just six plays, highlighted by an 87-yard run by Aaron Franklin on their second play of their first drive, and a five yard pass from Jonathon Najera to Sydney Jones on their seconds drive.
After taking a 21-7 lead into halftime, Najera was pulled for Antonio Hull, who drove the Bulldogs to two third-quarter scores that put the Bulldogs up for good.
PACIFIC
Muir 37, Glendale 0
The Mustangs (3-3, 3-0) earned their third straight shutout in the Pacific despite an penalty-filled performance against the Nitros (1-5, 0-3), who dropped their fourth straight game Friday night at Glendale High.
The Mustang defense shut down the Nitros’ offense, limiting them to 95 yards of offense for the game. Three different players accounted for Muir’s scores, Josh Muema-Washington scored twice, while Marceles Clash and Devin Leagons each scored on offense. Tony Claxton contributed a 60-yard fumble return on defense in the win.
Next Week, Muir hosts Burroughs while the Nitros travel to Apache Nation to take on Arcadia.
Arcadia 49, Hoover 6
The Apaches (2-4, 2-1) improved their standing in the Pacific League by handing the Tornadoes (2-4, 0-3) their fourth straight defeat Friday night at Arcadia High’s Apache Stadium.
Joey Willm needed one the first half to put the Apaches out of reach, rushing for 125 yards and scoring four touchdowns, including three touchdown catches from quarterback Zachary Yee. Yee threw for 249 yards and also scored a touchdown of his own in the win.
The Apaches will complete the “Glendale Two-step” next week when Glendale come to town, while Hoover hosts Pasadena.
SAN GABRIEL VALLEY
Downey 42, Warren 7
The Vikings (4-2, 1-0) once again claimed the annual “Fight For Firestone Blvd.” as they knocked off the Bears (0-6, 0-1) for the third straight year Friday night at Downey High’s Allen Layne Stadium.
Both teams scored early in the first, the Vikings scoring first on a 46-yard lateral passto Justin Huff. The Bears answered with a 21-yard score from quarterback Zaahid Summerville to Michael San Angelo to tie the game.
From then on, the Vikings scored the next 28 points in the first half, pulling away from the Bears. Justin Huff rushed for 170 yards and scored three touchdowns, two rushing and a receiving touchdown. It was his fifth straight game where re rushed for more than 100 yards.
Paramount 21, Gahr 7
The Pirates (5-1, 1-0) managed to take a 21-0 lead but then had to hold on as the Gladiators (3-3, 0-1) nearly overcame the deficit Friday night at Gahr High’s Rants Stadium.
Xavier Williams returned the opening kickoff 51 yards for a touchdown and Deonte Dixon scored from a yard out midway throught he first, putting the Pirates up 14-0. Alex Turner scored on a two-yard run with five second left in the half to put the Pirates up 21-0 at the half.
However, the Gladiators lost two opportunities to climb back into the game. Midway through the third, a fake field goal attempt resulted in an interception by Leotis Johnson III who ran the ball back 83 yards for an apparent score, but a holding call on Gahr brought the ball back to mid-field. After Gahr scored on a 51-yard pass to Christian Pabico, a subsequent drive stalled on the Pirates’ one-yard line as Alex Kline was stopped on fourth-and-goal.
SUBURBAN
La Mirada 42, Artesia 13
Quarterback Gerry Myres threw five touchdowns as the Matadores (6-1, 3-0) remained undefeated in Subvurban League play as they knocked off the Pioneers (1-6, 0-3) Friday night at Artesia High.
Myres missed only two of his 22 pass attempts, throwing for 210 yards in the victory. Myres scored the Matadores’ first four touchdowns in the game, hitting Tyler Luatua twice and Dallis Shipp and twin brother James Myres each in the first half.
Shipp caught 12 passes for 140 yards, while Luatua had four catches for 75 yards. The Matadores will host Glenn while Artesia journey to Ron Yary Stadium to face the Buccaneers.
