(BURBANK) – Burbank scored two times in the span of 40 seconds to open up a 14-0 half time into a 28-0 lead enroute to a very impressive 40-28 victory in non-league play.

“We have been working hard all week,” said Burbank head coach Hector Valencia.  “Our defense played well last week, but this week we wanted the offense to do the job.”

Bulldog starting quarterback Adam Coleman went 12 of 16 for 226 yards and five touchdowns, including four straight passes that were for scores in the second half blow-out against the Matadors defense.

San Gabriel’s (1-2) signal caller Isaac Valdez had a rough first half going six of eleven for 31 yards and no touchdowns.  The second half saw Valdez throw three late touchdowns in the final quarter and finished with 266 yards and three touchdowns.  He did throw for an interception early in the third quarter.

“It wasn’t a good game for us,” said Matador head coach Keith Jones.  “We just aren’t meshing very well all-around.  I like that the kids battled late, but it still isn’t very satisfying to me.”

Burbank (2-1) was able to expose an undersized defensive front, that allowed running back Ulises Ochoa to run wild for 130 yards and his back-up Leo Rodas had 84 yards on the ground.  Ochoa would also catch four balls for 35 yards and touchdown.

The Matadors were again bothered by their inability to take care of the ball as, Valdez coughed up the ball on the very first possession at the San Gabriel 28-yard line.

The Bulldogs would take advantage of the turnover and scored five plays later on an Ochoa 8-yard run.

Burbank would add a score in the second quarter when wide receiver Sam Bethany bailed Coleman out on a beautiful diving catch for a 16-yard touchdown pass.

After going down 28-0, the Matadors would finally find the end zone when Fabian Amaro (10 carries for 38 yards) scored from 4-yards out.

Bulldogs would score two more times to extend their lead to 40-6, before Valdez would find Mark Covarrubias (nine catches for 169 yards and two touchdowns) twice for scores and Andres Fernandez (his first career touchdown reception) to close the scoring.
