Tesoro just misses on this one!

(Covina) – Tesoro ran out to a 28-6 halftime lead and went on to beat South Hills 34-21 Thursday night at Covina District Field. The Titans were led by quarterback Brett Mason who threw for 347 yards and three touchdowns. Zach Mitchell led the ground attack with 86 yards and a score.

It started off well for South Hills when Ify Umodu returned the opening kick off 84 yards down to the Tesoro 11 yard line. But the drive stalled and a 32 yard Austin Daugherty field goal attempt sailed wide.

Tesoro came right back with a big play when Kyle Woolbright took a swing pass from Mason and turned it into a 64 yard touchdown.

The Titans were on the move again and marched down to the South Hills 21 yard line on their next possession. But then Geoffrey Vaughns stepped in front of a Mason toss and won a foot race 85 yards down the far side of the field for a touchdown to cut the lead to 7-6. A bad snap led to a missed extra point.

Tesoro struck with big play number two early in the second quarter. Mason connected with Cody Wittick for a 50 yard pitch and catch for a touchdown and a 14-6 lead.

South Hills went three and out on its next two series and Tesoro went in again. With 1:13 left in the first half, Woolbright ran a post pattern, hauled in a Mason strike and beat his man for a 70 yard touchdown and the Huskies were down 21-6 at the break.

Tesoro needed only two plays in the third quarter to get on the board again. Trevor Weis broke several tackles at the line of scrimmage and outran the secondary for 65 yards and a touchdown.

The Huskies struggled offensively in the third but Vaughns came up with a big play again late in the fourth. He weaved his way 55 yards for a touchdown and a Vince Hernandez pass to Umodu produced two points and suddenly the Huskies had new life.

Tesoro snuffed it out quickly however when a 60 yard, seven play drive was finished by a five yard TD jaunt by Mitchell for a 34-14 lead.

Dakota Behr caught a 21 yard touchdown pass late for the Huskies.

“We have a lot of things to improve on and we will. But you spend your life on the bunny slopes and you won’t get real good,” said South Hills Coach Steve Bogan. “Tesoro was the PAC 5 champs last year and they have a good football team. If we work hard and we want to get better we’ll get better.”

Vaughns was the main source of offense for South Hills. He caught five passes for 68 yards and carried the ball 11 times for 88 yards and a touchdown. And of course the 85 yard pick six.

The Huskies get Northview and Rosemead the next two weeks before beginning league play with West Covina October 16.
