Maranatha’s Caylon Swinnie

(Pasadena) – Maranatha outscored Heritage Christian 20-7 in the second quarter to open up a 14 point lead at halftime and went on to beat Heritage Christian 65-52 Friday night in Olympic League action.

Isaac Etter led the Minutemen with 13 points and Brandon Pomroy added  11.

Leading by just one after one after the first quarter, Maranatha broke it wide open in the second. Pomroy and Etter each knocked down threes and Caylon Swinnie also splashed one from downtown. Etter had seven in the quarter and Pomroy added another bucket as well for five.

Meanwhile the Minutemen defense clamped down on Heritage Christian. The Warriors missed 14 shots in the second while converting just three field goals. They also missed two of three from the line.

The 14 point gap was too much for Heritage to overcome. Andrew Davis warmed up in the third quarter hitting four consecutive baskets and Jayce Miller scored four points as the Warriors tried to get back in it. But Etter buried two more long range bombs to keep Heritage at a distance.

The Maranatha lead was 20 at one point and the Minutemen were still up by 17 at the end of three. Tempers flared in the fourth quarter as each side was hit with technicals but the Minutemen eventually closed it out.

Maranatha’s leading scorer, Jeremy Major also finished in double figures with ten and Jalen Jones chipped in nine. For Heritage Christian, Miller led the way with 17 points, Davis had nine and Jacob Lahorra tossed in 12.

Maranatha improved to 2-1 in league and 15 overall. The Warriors fell to 1-2 and 9-10.
