Bulldogs Bury Stangs in Fourth

(Pasadena) – Pasadena broke out its brand new gray and red uniforms in Friday’s rivalry match, and it proved to be a successful debut. The Bulldogs bounced back from a Wednesday loss at Crescenta Valley by steadily pulling away from rival Muir, racking up 29 fourth quarter points en route to convincingly prevail 69-49.

Dre Spight accrued nearly half of that by tacking 14 in this frame, before wrapping up the night with a season-high total of 29 points for Pasadena over five 3-pointers, two deucers in the first, and 10 of 11 free throws. He also yanked down eight rebounds, had an assist, steal, and committed zero turnovers.
The Dena Dawgs actually accounted for most of its 29 in the fourth at the charity stripe, where they nailed 17 of 20 (25 for 35 overall) freebies as the Stangs kept on fouling despite trailing by double-digits late in the game.

Dena started fine, maintaining a 15-9 advantage at the close of the first stanza, and stretched its lead to 28-11 off a Brandon Jolley bucket and pair of foul shots on the heels of a 13-2 open to the second quarter, before Muir countered with a 8-0 run and cut the margin down to nine, and ten when Jelani Mitchell racked one in near the halftime horn.

The Dawgs did themselves no favors on accord of its own bad offense to start the second half, where they were scoreless the first 5:17. The Mustangs continued chipping away, scoring four points during the cold PHS spell to get within six. Dejon “Da Da” Williams (12 points, eight boards) rallied Muir to within five with six consecutive points for his team, but Jolley hit a midrange J off a Spight assist at the buzzer to buy Dena a seven point lead.

Muir heightened the stakes more and inched to as close as four twice and five once, before Pasadena whirled off a 16-4 run amidst the heart of the fourth quarter to draw away.

Jelani Mitchell led the Mustangs on 16 points, and was followed by a double-double out of Taturs Mayberry (13 points-10 rebounds). Brandon Jolley added 17 points, eight rebounds, and three assists with a steal for the Dena Dawgs.

Pasadena upped its record to 14-5 and exits the first round in second (6-1) behind perfect CV (7-0) and will commence the second round of Pacific league this coming Tuesday with a home stand against Burbank at 5:00PM.
