Primitivo Perfecto! Knights Run the Table

Primitivo Gomez leads the Knights to the MVL Title

(El Monte) – Primitivo Gomez scored 25 points including 14 in the first quarter to spark Arroyo to a 47-33 win over Mt. View Friday night on the Vikings home floor. With the win the Knights ran the Mission Valley League table with a perfect 10-0 record.

“I think the last time we won the league championship was in 2007. The kids worked hard,” said Arroyo Coach Carlos Barajas. It was great to win league but it was special to go undefeated.”

Arroyo scored the first seven points of the game and went on a 12-2 run right out of the gate. Behind Gomez’ 14, which included a pair of threes, Arroyo led 18-8 after one.

The Knights kept the heat turned up in the second as they continued to press the action. Their defense held the Vikings to just two field goals and six points in the quarter. Gomez rattled in another bomb from behind the arc and scored eight in the quarter – two more than Mt. View’s entire output. Edgar Lupercio also knocked down a three ball as Arroyo extended its halftime margin to 31-14.

The Vikes climbed back in it in the third, limiting Arroyo to five points. Isaih Mendoza and Edgar Gonzalez combined for nine points and View cut the lead to nine.

The Knights wrapped it up in the fourth as the defense again clamped down. Lupercio hit another three. Ryan Tran added a bucket and Gomez buired three of four from the line to finish it off.

“I knew Primi was going to be Primi this year so I kind of focused a lot more on the other guys. I knew Lupercio, Tran, Peter Aholoka and all the other guys had to get better for this to happen,” Barajas said. “They put in the work and they deserve what they got.”

Lupercio finished with eight and Tran had six. For View, Jose Ojeda scored nine points, Gonzalez had eight and Jordan Santone tossed in six.

Mt. View ended up 4-6 in league and 12-14 overall and will most likely miss the playoffs. The Knights were 20-6 overall and are looking forward to the post season which begins next week.

“It’s exciting. It’s like the Tournament. We will be at home on Wednesday. Hopefully we’ll get a good draw and see what happens,” Barajas added.
