Spartans Rally Late for 13-13 Tie

By Big Tony Solorzano(Montebello) – A 13-point rally by Schurr ended with a failed two-point conversion as the Spartans tied California High 13-13 Friday night at Ken Davis Field.

Going into the contest between Schurr (2-1-1) and the Condors (1-2-1), Spartan head coach Ben Negrete said that he wanted to emphasize their defensive tackling, something they made full use of in the first half. The Schurr defense limited Cal’s leading rusher, Terris Jones to only 49 yards on 11 carries, including five carries where Jones gained a yard or less. Cal’s passing game fared no better, with senior quarterback Eddie Artiga only completing three passes in 10 attempts in the first half.

Condor head coach Ken Arnold admitted to going to a conservative offense in the first half as the air game continued to struggle, Artiga suffered a sprained ankle late in the fouth and exited the game as Aaron Contreras took over for the final series.

Cal took the lead after a scoreless first quarter, scoring just over a minute into the second quarter on Tyler Hadden’s 36-yard field goal. the score remained 3-0 until late in the third quarter when Hadden added a second field goal, this one from 26 yards out.

In the fourth, Terris Jones ran for 62 yards as part of a seven play drive that moved the ball 70 yards, ending in Jones’ one yard run to put the Condors up 13-0.

However, the Spartans began to rally as Cantu connected with Carlos Arredondo on a 25-yard pass to put the Spartans on the board with four mintues left in the game. Then after forcing Cal to punt, Cantu drove the Spartans again, this time ogin 65 yards in 12 plays, finishing the drive with a 5-yard run with 37 seconds left, but the two-point try failed, ended the game in the 13-13 tie.

Before he was knocked out, Artiga went four of 12 for only 59 yards, his best throw going 32 yards to Ceasar Viscarra, who by virtue of that pass led the receiving for Cal. Jones finished the game with 19 carries for 123 yards and the touchdown, while Kevin Attanasio had nine carreis for 92 yards. On Schurr’s side, Cantu went 18 of 34 for 230 yards and a touchdown, Arredondo had 10 carries for 110 and the 25 yard touchdown. Ironically, until Arredondo’s last three receptions, Angel Sanchez was leading the receivers with only two catches for 78 yards, including a 44 yard pass that ended on the 1-yard line as time expired in the first half. Nicholas Castillo led the ground game with 14 carried for 95 yards.

Cal will close out their non league schedule next week at Villa Park, while Schurr travels to Whittier District Field to face off against the Whittier Cardinals. Both games are scheduled for Thursday October 8th.
