The Big Boot! Burroughs' Michael Solano strikes home the game winner against Muir

(Burbank)- Burroughs kicker Michael Solano drilled a 22-yard field goal with 13-seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to give the Indians a 9-6 victory over Muir on Friday night.

“We played one quarter of football,” said a relieved and elated Burroughs coach Keith Knoop. “This is what happens when you do that, so we were fortunate.”

What happened was Muir took 6-0 lead with 3:05 to play in the second quarter on Eddie Tripp’s four-yard run and held onto it for roughly the next 25 minutes of game play.

The Indian offense continued to sputter, running back Dalton Williams was getting banged around and coughed up the ball early in the second half. Quarterback Lucas Yanez could get nothing going through the air as he was picked twice, had passes dropped, and receivers short circuiting routes.

The Mustang appeared to dominate as quarterback Jarron Williams continually guided his team across midfield before stalling out three times in the second half and turning the ball over on downs at the Burroughs 25, 33, and 31.

“We were awful, but I kept looking at the scoreboard and seeing we were only down by six. I said to the defense over and over again give me one more shot, give me one more shot,” said Knoop.

With 3:36 to play the Indians started at their own 31. Muir was offside for five yards. Williams ran for five more. Darrell Cunningham went 13-yards on a counter play to the Mustang 46. Yanez ran 38-yards through traffic to the eight. From there Williams blasted up the gut of the defense for the tying score.

On the point after Muir’s Troy Hunter launched himself coming through the line and blocked Solano’s point after. With 2:14 to play the game was still knotted at 6-6.

The Indians celebrate Casey Barbello (24), Derrick Casella (74), Charlie Hosea (45), Andrew McKnight (25)

The contest completed its 180 degree turn when the Mustangs fumbled the kick-off and Burroughs recovered at the Mustang 22. Williams carried twice for eight-yards, Yanez fought off defenders in the backfield to bring up a fourth and one he converted by going three yards to the nine-yard line.

After Williams went another four yards, Solano came out on second and goal from the five to kick the game winner.

Burroughs, 2-2, welcomes Hoover next Thursday night, while Muir, now 0-4, comes back to Burbank’s District Field to play the red hot Bulldogs.
