(Monrovia)- The Monrovia Wildcats cruised past the Sierra Canyon Trail Blazers 62-10 Friday night at Monrovia High School.

Wildcats senior running back Kurt Scoby led the offense with 14 carries for 198 yards and 5 touchdowns, including two 62-yard bursts. Scoby tied his season-high in touchdowns (which he earned against Arcadia in their second game of the season) with ease, bursting through the gaps in the defense.

The Trail Blazers’ offense had trouble getting anything going due to the tenacious Wildcat defense. The only time they answered the Wildcats was after the field goal that capped off their final drive of the first quarter. The 7-3 score was the closest the Trail Blazers came all game.

With a 41-10 halftime score, the Wildcats never looked back and scored three more touchdowns in the second half to bury the Trail Blazers.

Monrovia now looks forward to next week’s matchup at Montebello High School as they are set to face the Oilers.

***Eight of the nine Wildcat touchdowns came from their running game. The only passing touchdown thrown by senior quarterback Deshawn Potts was a pass to senior wide receiver Crayvon Gillespie that he caught and 68 yards for the score.

***Monrovia had three different running backs find the end zone: Scoby, senior Darione Jones (two touchdowns) and sophomore Kameron Johnson (one touchdown).

***The first-round playoff victory for the Wildcats starts their journey to winning their fourth consecutive CIF championship.

***Monrovia head coach Ryan Maddox on the win: “Our offensive line played great, opening up some large holes for our run game. [Sierra Canyon] is a good football team, but they didn’t have numbers; the guys playing on the O-line were also playing D-line. They were tired and we took advantage of that.”

***Sierra Canyon’s only touchdown drive started at their own 16-yard line. Senior quarterback Andre Nunez went 4-of-9 on the drive for 62 yards. The drive was capped off with a 5-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Isaiah Renfro. This made the score 27-10 and was the last time the Trail Blazers scored in the 2013 season.

***Towards the end of the first quarter, Scoby broke for a 69-yard touchdown run that was called back due to an offensive holding penalty.

***Maddox on Scoby: “We had great blocking from the O-line and receivers, he has great vision, great pad level, and … he does what

he does.”

***Monrovia allowed a touchdown for the second consecutive week. Before last week’s game at San Marino, they shut out their opponents for four consecutive weeks.

***The Wildcats’ 62 points matches last week’s point total as their second-highest of the season. They scored 77 points at La Canada in the 77-0 win three weeks ago (Oct. 24).

***Monrovia’s starting offensive line: LT: Ryan Chang. LG: Gage Buosanti. C: Erik Brooks. RG: Josh Cano. RT: Avonte Moore.

***Sierra Canyon’s starting offensive line: LT: Devon O’Grady. LG: Patrick Gonzales. C: Marcus Brown. RG: David Verdin. RT: Dexter Stinson.

***This game was a rematch of last season’s semifinal between the schools. Monrovia won on the road 42-31, before going on to capture a third consecutive CIF title.
